Umar Faruk, Gusau
The striking lecturers of the Federal College of Education Technical (FCET) Gusau, Zamfara State, have announced suspension of their strike action unconditionally.
The three-month old strike action was called off on Thursday after long hours meeting of the members of the union held at the College in Gusau, the state capital.
Addressing newsmen shortly after the meeting, a member of the academic union FCET Gusau, Muktar Abdullahi apologised to parents, guardians and students for the inconvenience caused them during the over three months strike in the college.
“Let me first of all start by apologising to students, we will sumount the long absence of academic activities. Certainly, the academic activities have resumed from now. What happened has happened, full resumption of academic is sacrosanct”, he said
According to him, the decision to call off the strike was reached unconditionally.
He said members of the union have reached an agreement after meeting and they were able to resolve issues at stake in the college.
Earlier on, the Coalition of Zamfara State Civil Society and the well wishers for the progress of Federal College Of Education Technical Gusau (FCET) have recently staged a protest over what they called anti-progress of education by the College Of Education Academic Staff Union, COEASU, Chapter of the College.
Speaking on behalf of the Coalition, Alhaji Nasiru Garba, said that they showed their solidarity to Hajiya Hauwa’u Mukhtar Abdul Karim, being the substantive and only female and indigenous provost since the creation of the FCET Gusau in 1988.
According to him, some members of the embattled union were not wishing the college well; as a result, they went to the extent of inviting their co-union members from over eight states of the federation to assist them in the fight against what God has done.
He said, “Some Academic Staff of the college do not want the college to be manned by a substantive provost. They always want to lead the institution in acting capacity as caretakers, which is very bad.
“By doing so, the school will never progress”.
He however, appealed to the Minister of Education to consider appropriate action to the COEASU members to allow the Provost to continue with the good job she has started.
