The Abeokuta Grammar School Old Boys’ Association (AGSOBA) has announced a week-long line-up of activities to commemorate the school’s 118th Founder’s Day Anniversary, scheduled to hold from Monday, July 13 to Sunday, July 19, 2026.
The celebration, themed, “Honouring Our Foundations, Building Our Future,” is expected to bring together alumni from across Nigeria and the diaspora, current students, and other stakeholders to celebrate the school’s rich heritage and contributions to education.
According to the programme released by the association, the anniversary will commence with a press parley on Monday, July 13, during which the leadership will highlight the activities of the association and present a scorecard of its achievements over the past year.
Other activities lined up for the celebration include a Valedictory Service and Call to AGSOBA, a Staff Appreciation Dinner, the Anniversary Lecture, a Variety Night, the Annual General Meeting (AGM), the inauguration of various projects within the school, as well as special Jumat and Thanksgiving services.
A major highlight of the celebration will be the Anniversary Lecture, scheduled for Wednesday, July 15, at the AGSOBA Hall. The lecture, themed “Honouring Our Foundations, Building Our Future: From Classroom to Relevance,” will be delivered by the Honourable Minister of State for Health, Agsoba Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako.
The week-long celebration will culminate on Sunday, July 19, with a thanksgiving service at St. Peter’s Cathedral, Ake, Abeokuta, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
Speaking on the significance of the anniversary, the President-General of AGSOBA, Agsoba (Dr.) Obafemi Kotoye, DA 6771, an Egba High Chief, said the annual celebration is aimed at preserving the school’s enduring legacy while inspiring a renewed commitment to excellence and future development.
Kotoye expressed confidence that Abeokuta Grammar School would continue to occupy its pride of place among Nigeria’s foremost legacy schools.
He noted that the association has remained committed to the growth and development of the institution through sustained investments in infrastructure, academic support, and other developmental initiatives.
He also commended the unwavering commitment of AGSOBA members across the world to the advancement of their alma mater.
“From North America to the United Kingdom and Ireland, and from Lagos to Abeokuta and Ibadan, we have built a strong alumni network that has continued to invest its financial and intellectual resources in ensuring that Abeokuta Grammar School remains on the path of academic excellence,” Kotoye said.
The AGSOBA President-General further disclosed that one of the major priorities of his administration is the resuscitation of the School Governing Board to accelerate institutional development and harness the wealth of experience and expertise within the association for the benefit of the school.
Founded in 1908, Abeokuta Grammar School has produced an impressive array of distinguished alumni who have excelled in diverse fields. They include businessman and traditional ruler, Oba Adedapo Tejuoso, the Osile of Oke Ona Egba; Afrobeat icon and activist Fela Anikulapo-Kuti; renowned paediatrician Professor Olikoye Ransome-Kuti; physician and pro-democracy activist Dr. Beko Anikulapo-Kuti; the Honourable Minister of State for Health, Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako; acclaimed filmmaker Tunde Kelani; former Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Professor Olusola Babatunde Kehinde; retired Air Vice Marshal Al-Amin Daggash, former Chief of Defence Staff; former member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Lanre Laoshe; and popular Afrobeats artiste, Daniel Anidugbe, popularly known as Kizz Daniel, among many others.
