Bauchi State Emergency Management Agency, on Wednesday, confirmed the death of 11 more people following the recent flood disaster in Bauchi North Senatorial District.
This brings the number of deaths recorded so far in the disaster to 18.
The recent flood incident occurred in Gadiya village in Gamawa Local Government Area of the State, leaving the affected communities to continue to count their losses.
Over 200 houses were destroyed by the flood while over 300 farmlands were washed away while villagers became stranded and homeless.
Two weeks ago, no fewer than seven persons were reportedly killed by severe flooding due to the downpour in the same Bauchi North Senatorial District.
The rain which fell for three consecutive days claimed the lives of domestic animals and destroyed farmlands and other valuables.
Village head of Gadiya, Yau Umar, said on Wednesday that more than 100 people have taken refuge in his palace.
He added that others have taken shelter in the village mosques and schools.
He appealed to the government and philanthropists to provide urgent assistance.
Another resident said the flood-ravaged almost half of the village because many houses were built with mud.
He said the villagers are facing severe shortages of food, shelter, and clothing, as many have lost their means of livelihood, leaving children hungry.
He also recounted sleepless nights in the run up to the flood, which eventually forced them out of their homes.
He said men in the village spent hours rescuing women, children, and those trapped in collapsed buildings, as emergency assistance from authorities was slow to arrive.
SEMA Information Officer, Abdullah Saleh, who confirmed the incident, said that thousands of people have been displaced, as their homes and farmlands have been destroyed.
Aliyu added that assessments were ongoing across the three affected LGAs of Gamawa, Katagum and Shira Local Government Area.
He stated further that SEMA had begun the distribution of relief materials to the affected victims, with N1 million given to each affected LGA for onward distribution among the victims.
