Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, on Monday gave the assurance that British-Nigerian boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, and another passenger involved in a road traffic accident along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway are receiving the best possible medical care.
The Governor disclosed this in a statement posted on his official Facebook page, as investigations into the incident commenced.
Abiodun confirmed that the accident involved a vehicle conveying Joshua and three others.
He wrote, “We wish to confirm that British-Nigerian two-time unified world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, was involved in a road traffic accident earlier today along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.
“The vehicle conveying a team of four reportedly collided with a stationary truck, resulting in the tragic loss of two lives.”
The Governor said the state government was working closely with its Lagos counterpart to manage the situation and provide support to all those affected.
He said, “As the Governments of Ogun and Lagos States, we are closely monitoring the situation and will ensure that all affected persons receive the best possible medical care.
“Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident have commenced.”
Governor Abiodun expressed condolences to the families of the deceased.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and share in their grief at this painful moment.
“We pray that Almighty God grants them the strength and fortitude to bear this irreparable loss,” he prayed.
The Governor said Joshua and another passenger were taken to a specialised medical facility in Lagos, where they were assessed by medical professionals.
Governor Abiodun added, “Anthony Joshua and another passenger were promptly evacuated to a specialised medical facility in Lagos.
“Following thorough clinical evaluations, medical professionals have confirmed that both patients are stable and do not require any emergency medical intervention at this time.”
He further stated that continuous medical monitoring had been put in place.
“A full medical team has been constituted and will continue to monitor them closely.”
The Ogun Governor further confirmed that Joshua was conscious after the accident and had been in touch with his family.
He stated, “We can also confirm that Anthony Joshua is conscious and has been in contact with his family.”
He concluded by acknowledging public concern and appealing for privacy.
“We appreciate the concern and goodwill expressed by members of the public and respectfully request privacy for Anthony Joshua and his family at this time,” he said.
Meanwhile, in a joint statement issued by Special Adviser, Information, Ogun State, Kayode Akinmade and Commissioner, Information, Lagos State, Gbenga Omotoso, on Monday, the two state governments expressed sympathy with the families.
The governments expressed sympathy with the families of those who lost their lives in the incident and assured the public that investigations were underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash.
“We sympathise with the families of those involved in the accident, and pray that God will grant them the strength to go through this difficult time,” the statement noted.
