From Idris Khalid, Bauchi
Bauchi State has joined other parts of the world in commemorating the 2026 World Contraception Day with an awareness campaign aimed at promoting access to family planning, childbirth spacing and reproductive health services.

The campaign was organised by the Bauchi State Primary Health Care Board (BSPHCB) in collaboration with the Society for Family Health (SFH) through its Delivering Innovation in Self-Care (DISC) 2.0 Project.
The 2026 commemoration was held under the theme, “No Barriers, Just Choices: Contraceptive Access,” which highlights the need to remove barriers to contraceptive information and services.
As part of activities marking the day, health stakeholders embarked on a road walk through major streets of Bauchi metropolis to sensitise residents on the importance of family planning, childbirth spacing and reproductive health.
The campaign also provided an opportunity for health workers and partners to interact with members of the public and encourage individuals and couples to seek accurate information and make use of available health services.
The road walk culminated at the Bayan Fada Primary Healthcare Centre, where the partners conducted an outreach programme featuring health education, counselling and family planning services for community members.
Speaking with journalists, the SFH-DISC 2.0 State Programme Adviser, Pharmacist Alhamdu Nufin Allah, said the campaign was designed to make family planning information and services more visible and accessible to communities.
He explained that the DISC 2.0 Project promotes innovative self-care approaches that complement existing healthcare services while empowering individuals to make informed decisions about their health.
Nufin Allah stressed the importance of collaboration with government institutions and other health partners, noting that partnerships were critical to expanding the reach and sustainability of health interventions.
Also speaking, the Executive Chairman of the BSPHCB, Dr. Rilwanu Mohammed, represented by the Director of Primary Health Care, Dr. Sufyan Ahmed Jibrin, outlined efforts by the state government to strengthen family planning and reproductive health services.
Dr. Jibrin said the government’s commitment was focused on ensuring that residents had access to appropriate information and quality services through strengthened health facilities and community-based interventions.
He commended SFH-DISC 2.0 and other development partners for their continued support, saying such collaborations were contributing to the strengthening of the healthcare system in the state.
Other activities marking the commemoration included a media briefing, outreach and in-reach services, a live radio discussion on childbirth spacing and a town hall meeting involving stakeholders and community representatives.
The activities provided platforms for public education, community dialogue and access to services, while reinforcing the message of the 2026 World Contraception Day campaign on improving access to contraceptive information and services.
