The Urban Community Transformation and Empowerment Network (UCTEN), in collaboration with Women Aid Africa, has intensified efforts to promote women’s health through a community-based breast cancer awareness and screening programme in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The outreach, which took place on Saturday, October 31, 2026, at Kugba Primary Health Care Centre, Adatan, brought together healthcare professionals, community development advocates and other stakeholders to educate women on breast cancer awareness, early detection and the importance of seeking timely medical attention.

The programme received support from the Ogun State Primary Health Care Board, the Ogun State Ministry of Health and other collaborating partners. Activities included breast cancer sensitisation, physical breast examinations and ultrasound screening.

Speaking to newsmen on the sidelines of the outreach, UCTEN President, Dr. Hafiz Bello, described community-based health interventions as essential to improving access to healthcare information and preventive services, particularly among women in underserved communities.

He commended Women Aid Africa for its commitment to promoting women’s health and stressed the need for stronger partnerships among non-governmental organisations, government institutions and healthcare providers to address preventable health challenges.

Dr. Bello further reaffirmed UCTEN’s commitment to supporting programmes that promote public health, social inclusion and sustainable community development, noting that access to health education and early screening could make a significant difference in the fight against breast cancer.

Also speaking, the organisation’s Secretary, Mr. Kunle Bamgbose, and Treasurer, Mr. Adeyinka Adesina, commended Women Aid Africa for the initiative, noting that sustained public enlightenment and accessible screening services were critical to encouraging early diagnosis and reducing complications associated with late detection.

In her remarks, a public health expert, UCTEN member and healthcare volunteer, Mrs. Olulaanu Adelanwa-Bello, praised the initiative and called on relevant stakeholders, corporate organisations and government agencies to support more interventions of this nature.

She emphasised that breast cancer awareness should be a continuous public health priority rather than an occasional campaign.

The outreach provided participating women with opportunities to receive professional health education and access screening services, reinforcing the importance of regular breast examinations and prompt medical evaluation of unusual breast changes.

At the conclusion of the programme, UCTEN appreciated Women Aid Africa, the Ogun State Primary Health Care Board, the Ogun State Ministry of Health, the management of Kugba Primary Health Care Centre and all other partners and volunteers for their contributions.

The organisation reaffirmed its resolve to deepen partnerships and support community-driven interventions that improve access to essential services and enhance the overall wellbeing of residents.

The initiative underscores the importance of collective action in promoting early detection, protecting women’s health and building healthier communities.
