Commemorating the World Hepatitis Day, WASH 94.9 FM, Lagos is continuously emphasizing its niche in the health sector in collaboration with, Phlox Health WASH Foundation, the Society for Gastroenterology and Hepatology in Nigeria, Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria, Lagos Chapter and Rotary Club Akute.
The partnering organizations on Friday 8th August, 2025 put together a free screening and vaccination for Lagosians at the premises of WASH 94.9FM, Olowora, Lagos.
Delivering her speech on the theme, “Hepatitis, Let’s Break It Down,” Dr. Emuobor Odeghe, a Doctor and Consultant Gastroenterologist at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), noted that hepatitis is the major cause of liver cancer and 75% of Nigerians have been exposed to hepatitis.
In essence, out of every four Nigerians, at least three persons must have come in contact with hepatitis, going by her statistics.
In her words “taking excessive alcohol can expose individuals to the risk of hepatitis. Hepatitis B virus is about 100 times more infectious than the HIV virus. Children can contact Hepatitis B in their environment by touching wounds of their friends among other ways of transmission.”
“To prevent possible effects, tests are essential. Every Nigerian is at the risk of hepatitis b but other people at risk are healthcare workers thus screening is very essential, and vaccination if confirmed negative or treatment if positive” she added.
In his opening remarks, the Program Director of Phlox Health WASH Foundation, Mr Abayomi Alao observed that the population of hepatitis patients is growing and the screening and vaccination organized is aimed at reversing the trend.
He added that the financial and emotional burdens of hepatitis are huge and unaffordable. The direct economic burden of hepatitis in 2022 was estimated at over N13 trillion.
The audience was appreciated for joining the fight against hepatitis and urged to listen to the experts who will break down the issues and that they should share their knowledge with friends, neighbours, families and all those they have access to.
Dr Omobolanle Johnson, a Health Physician and Senior Medical Officer, Lagos State Primary Healthcare Board at the event also added that it is essential to vaccinate all children at birth.
While addressing the attendees, she stressed, “health is wealth and thus we all need to be intentional about vaccination. Both children and adults should go for the hepatitis test. Diet, water and exercise are crucial for our living well and health. We implore Nigerians to take care of ourselves and develop healthy habits”.
