Preview: Nigeria, Tunisia clash in historic AFCON rivalry

Winners in their opening matches, Nigeria and Tunisia will clash in their second Group C fixture at the Complexe Sportif de Fes in Fes on Saturday, with kick-off scheduled for 21:00 local time (20:00 GMT/9pm WAT).

Both sides are aiming to secure an early qualification to the knockout stage after convincing victories in their respective openers.

The history between the two sides adds an extra layer of intensity to this encounter, as detailed in a preview on the CAF website on Friday.

Their first meeting came in 1961 during qualifying for the 1962 AFCON. Nigeria won the home leg 2–1, but after walking off the pitch in the return fixture with the score at 2–2, Tunisia were awarded a 2–0 victory, progressing 3–2 on aggregate.

The two sides have also met in four FIFA World Cup qualifying campaigns (1978, 1982, 1986, 2010), with Nigeria advancing on penalties in 1982 and Tunisia topping their group in 1978 to qualify for the World Cup.

At AFCON finals, Nigeria and Tunisia have faced each other six times, with Nigeria winning three matches and Tunisia claiming one victory.

Two matches ended in draws and were decided on penalties: Tunisia won the 2004 semi-final 5–3, while Nigeria triumphed in the 2006 quarter-final 6–5.

Other notable meetings include the 2019 third-place play-off, which Nigeria won 1–0 thanks to an early goal from Odion Ighalo, and the 2021 Round of 16, where Tunisia secured a 1–0 win with Youssef Msakni scoring in the 47th minute.

Both teams enter this match with momentum and confidence.

Nigeria are unbeaten in their last seven AFCON group matches (W6 D1), scoring in each of their last seven AFCON group games, while Tunisia are unbeaten in their second group match in their last five AFCON appearances (W3 D2), losing only once in 2013.

With both sides seeking to secure early qualification, the clash promises to be highly competitive, blending tactical discipline with attacking flair and historical rivalry.

Kick-off is set for 21:00 local time, with all eyes on how Nigeria’s high-tempo play and Tunisia’s structured approach will unfold in what could be a decisive contest for Group C supremacy.

Meanwhile, the Super Eagles began their campaign with a 2–1 win over Tanzania, marking their 14th time opening an AFCON finals campaign with a victory.

Key contributions came from Ademola Lookman, who scored the decisive goal from outside the penalty area, becoming the first Nigerian to net from range at AFCON since Emmanuel Emenike in 2013.

Semi Ajayi scored his first AFCON goal in his tenth appearance, while Alex Iwobi registered two assists in the match, creating 18 chances in his 19th AFCON appearance.

Victor Osimhen attempted seven shots, the most by a Nigerian in an AFCON match since Victor Obinna against Algeria in the 2010 third-place match, as Nigeria completed 451 of 501 passes against Tanzania.

Samuel Chukwueze attempted ten dribbles, completing six successfully, highlighting Nigeria’s attacking intent.

Tunisia, meanwhile, began their campaign with a 3–1 victory over Uganda.

Ellyes Skhiri opened the scoring after 10 minutes, marking Tunisia’s 100th goal in AFCON finals, making them the sixth nation to reach this milestone. Skhiri’s goal was Tunisia’s first in the opening 10 minutes of a tournament opener since Issam Jemâa against Senegal in 2008. Elias Achouri scored twice, becoming the first Tunisian to net a brace at AFCON since Wahbi Khazri in 2021.

Hannibal Mejbri, who assisted Tunisia’s opening goal, created four chances – the most in the match – while Montassar Talbi attempted the most passes (51) and completed 48, showcasing Tunisia’s structured play.

Trabesi, Chelle’s reaction
Eric Chelle – Nigeria head coach:
“Tunisia are a big team with a strong playing identity and a solid World Cup qualifying campaign behind them. They play good football and started this tournament very well. But we have a good team too, and we are improving with every match. In my mind, we may either let Tunisia have the ball and play directly when we recover it, or continue with our philosophy. There is no pressure on us — this tournament is an opportunity to correct what went wrong before and continue building our identity.”

Trabelsi and Chelle
Sami Trabelsi – Tunisia head coach:
“Yes, in the last game there was no real expression. When we play with only organised offense and defense, it decreases the performance of some players. Nigeria are strong offensively and defensively. All players will be involved, not only defenders. We focus only on the field; social media or past results will not affect us. Hazem is fit and doing better in training. There is no national team without weak points, and we have studied Nigeria’s. To go far, we must beat big teams.”
