Renowned American singer, songwriter and actress Dolly Parton on Tuesday died at the age of 80.

Parton’s death was announced by her nephew, Bryan Seaver, who described the moment as one filled with both pride and sadness.

The music icon leaves behind a career spanning more than six decades across music, film, business and philanthropy, during which she rose from poverty in rural Tennessee to become one of the world’s most recognisable entertainers.

Facts about the late country music legend:

She was born on January 19, 1946, into a poor family in a two-room log cabin in Sevier County, Tennessee, the fourth of 12 children.

Her father, Robert Lee Parton Sr., an illiterate sharecropper, later worked his way up to owning a small tobacco farm, while her mother introduced her to traditional folk ballads and music.

She started performing as a child

Parton’s journey into entertainment began long before she became a global star.

By the age of 13, she had appeared on local radio and television in East Tennessee, performed at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville and recorded her first single, “Puppy Love”.

She wrote more than 3,000 songs

Parton’s songwriting catalogue is a defining feature of her legacy.

She wrote more than 3,000 songs during her career, including some of the most enduring songs in country music and popular culture.

Among them were “Jolene”, “I Will Always Love You”, “9 to 5” and “Coat of Many Colours”.

She sold more than 100 million records

Parton’s success was not limited to songwriting. She sold more than 100 million records worldwide, placing her among the best-selling female artists in music history.

Her 1977 album Here You Come Again became her first album to sell one million copies and earned her first Grammy Award after years of nominations.

Her catalogue continued to attract audiences across generations, helping establish her as an artist whose influence extended beyond the traditional country music audience.

She became an award-winning music legend

Parton’s career was marked by major awards and historic recognitions. She won 10 competitive Grammy Awards from 55 nominations and received the Recording Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011, bringing her commonly cited Grammy total to 11 when the honorary award is included.

She successfully crossed into acting

Parton’s talents extended beyond music. She made her film debut in 1980 alongside Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin in 9 to 5. She also wrote and performed the film’s theme song, which became a No. 1 hit and earned an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song.

She built a business empire around her name

Parton’s influence also extended into business. She became involved with the Tennessee theme park that was renamed Dollywood in 1986, helping transform it into one of the region’s best-known tourist attractions.

She became one of America’s most prominent philanthropists

Parton’s charitable work became another major part of her legacy. Through the Dollywood Foundation’s Imagination Library, she promoted childhood literacy by providing books to children.

The programme, launched in 1995, grew into a major early childhood literacy initiative, distributing more than 80 million books across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia, according to the Recording Academy.

Parton also supported medical research, disaster relief and other charitable causes

She donated $1 million towards COVID-19 vaccine research, a contribution that became associated with the development of Moderna’s vaccine. In 2022, she was awarded the Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy.

Her personal life remained largely private

Parton’s marriage to Carl Dean was one of the longest-lasting relationships in entertainment. The couple married in 1966 and remained together for nearly six decades before Dean died in March 2025 at the age of 82.

His death came about 17 months before Parton’s own death.

She remained active despite health concerns

Parton’s final years were marked by health concerns, although she continued to express interest in working and pursuing new projects.

She postponed her Las Vegas residency in September 2025 and later withdrew from some public appearances amid health issues.
