Garun Kurama Mosque: Two-decade construction stalled as community seeks urgent funding

By Tom Garba, Garun Kurama

For over 20 years, the residents of Garun Kurama have poured their hearts, resources, and hopes into building a central mosque that would serve as a spiritual and communal hub. Yet, the structure remains incomplete, its skeletal frame standing as a poignant reminder of unfulfilled aspirations due to chronic funding shortages. Now, community leaders are making a heartfelt plea to well-meaning individuals and organizations to help bring this long-delayed project to fruition.

The mosque, envisioned as a place of worship and unity for the Muslims in the community, began construction in the early 2000s. Despite the dedication of local residents, who have contributed labor, materials, and modest funds, the project has faced insurmountable financial hurdles.

Rising costs of building materials, coupled with economic challenges in the region, have left the community unable to complete critical phases of construction, including roofing, flooring, and essential furnishings.

“We have done all we can as a community, but our resources are limited,” said Shehu Bawa, Chairman of the Mosque Construction Committee, during an interview with our correspondent.

“This mosque is more than a building; it is a symbol of our faith and togetherness. We are appealing to generous individuals, philanthropists, and organizations to come to our aid and help us complete this sacred project.”

Malam Haruna Aliyu, the committee’s Secretary, echoed Bawa’s sentiments, emphasizing the urgency of the situation. “For over two decades, we have prayed under temporary shelters and endured harsh weather conditions. Our youth and elders deserve a proper place to worship. We are calling on kind-hearted Nigerians to support us in making this dream a reality.”

The community has set up a dedicated account to receive contributions from donors, ensuring transparency and accountability. Interested individuals can contact the committee leaders directly for details on how to contribute:

Malam Haruna Aliyu (Secretary): 08120464883, 07087300469

Shehu Bawa (Chairman): 07088923707

Below is the account details for individuals or corporate organisations donations:

Bank: Keystone
AccNo. 1012846127
Acc Name : Garun Kurama central mosque committee

Donations of any amount can be sent to the account details displayed on the image, as well as building materials or technical expertise, are warmly welcomed, the leaders noted. They expressed optimism that with external support, the mosque could be completed within the next year, providing a lasting legacy for Garun Kurama and surrounding areas.

The plight of Garun Kurama’s mosque reflects broader challenges faced by rural communities in Nigeria, where infrastructure projects often stall due to limited funding. However, unlike state-backed initiatives, Garun Kurama’s mosque relies entirely on community efforts and external goodwill.

As the sun sets over the unfinished structure, the people of Garun Kurama continue to pray—not only for divine blessings but for the kindness of strangers to help them build a place where those prayers can be offered in dignity.
