. Ex-NLC President, Sunmonu, Sule-Kano, Alaje headline Independence Special Edition

As Nigeria marks another anniversary of independence, the country’s celebrated aspiration for a prosperous and economically secure citizenry is confronting a sobering reality: for millions of workers and families, the struggle is no longer about achieving a comfortable life but simply holding on to the one they have.

That uncomfortable reality will take centre stage on Sunday, October 11, 2026, when the popular monthly interview discourse, Boiling Point Arena, holds its 48th edition as an Independence Special for Nigerian workers.

The searching question at the heart of the conversation is:
“Where Did the Middle Class Go? How Are Nigerians Surviving the Cost-of-Living Crisis and What Can Government Do to Ease Hardship/ Pain?”

To be transmitted via Zoom, the discourse, over a two-hour duration starting from 8pm, will be broadcast live on seven partner radio stations across Lagos, Ogun and Delta States.

Boiling Point Arena, the once-in-a-month current affairs programme which debuted four years ago, is hosted by a veteran journalist and communication strategy expert, Ayo Arowojolu.

Bringing depth to the discussion are three personalities whose professional and public experiences span the labour movement, political science and economic analysis.

Lined up as Discussants for the edition are a pioneer former President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Hassan Sunmonu, now an Octogenarian/elder statesman, Prof Dan Sule Kano, a professor of Political Science at the Bayero University, Kano, and Dr Paul Alaje, a prominent economist and versatile financial analyst.

Frontline traditional ruler, the Olowu of Owu Kingdom, Oba Prof Saka Matemilola will Chair the session and herald the discourse with a keynote address.

The special edition comes at a time when the traditional idea of the Nigerian middle class appears increasingly under pressure.

For generations of Nigerians, having a regular job was expected to provide a measure of economic security: a decent home, adequate food, children’s education, transportation, healthcare, modest savings and the ability to plan for the future.

But that expectation is being severely tested. For many workers, the monthly salary that once provided some breathing space now disappears almost as soon as it arrives.

Food competes with rent. Rent competes with school fees. Transport competes with electricity bills, while healthcare competes with virtually everything else.

And savings, once regarded as an essential part of responsible financial planning, are increasingly becoming a luxury many households can barely afford.

The result is a profound question about the changing character of Nigerian society: Is the country’s middle class disappearing, shrinking, or simply being forced into a new category of economic survival?

It is these questions that the 48th edition of Boiling Point Arena will place under the microscope.

A powerful Independence conversation, the timing is deliberate,
coming shortly after Nigeria’s October 1 Independence anniversary. The edition will provide an opportunity to examine the meaning of economic independence from the perspective of the ordinary Nigerian worker.

After decades of nationhood, what does independence mean to a worker whose income struggles to keep pace with the cost of food, housing, transportation, education and healthcare?

What does economic freedom mean to a young professional who earns a salary but cannot afford decent accommodation in the city where he or she works?

What does prosperity mean to a family that must continually choose which essential bill to pay first? And what happens to a nation when a substantial section of its formally employed population begins to live from one payday to the next?

These questions will form the foundation of what promises to be one of the most searching editions of Boiling Point Arena.

The combination is significant. Labour, politics and economics, three lenses through which the Nigerian worker’s current reality can be examined.

Perhaps, the most important question facing the discussion is whether Nigeria’s economic growth and reforms are translating into improved living conditions for the people who make up the backbone of the economy.

A worker can be employed and still be poor. A professional can earn what appears to be a respectable salary and still struggle, just as a small business owner can remain busy without necessarily becoming more financially secure.

This raises a fundamental distinction between having income and having purchasing power. The real measure of economic wellbeing may therefore not simply be how much Nigerians earn, but what their earnings can actually buy.

All these are the deeper crisis that the discourse aim to interrogate on Sunday, October 11, 2026 at 8pm.

More importantly, Boiling Point Arena will ask whether Nigerians can continue to absorb economic shocks through personal sacrifice and continous borrowing and how long can families postpone healthcare, housing improvements, education plans and savings?

What can government do? The discussion will not stop at identifying the problem. A major component of the Independence Special will be the search for practical answers to the question of what government can do to ease the pain.

Among the partner radio stations are; WASH 94.9FM, Lagos, Sweet 107.1FM, Abeokuta, Roots 97.1FM, Abeokuta, Erimbe 94.7FM, Shagamu, Women Radio 91.7FM, Mowe, Opera Tune 106.3FM, Abeokuta, and Kruzz 92.9FM, Asaba, Delta State alongside a cable television station, NSTV, on GOtv Channel.
