Today, 27th September 2025, marks the first anniversary of Nigeria’s first health radio, WASH 94.9FM, Lagos. When the radio station hit the airwaves one year ago with great expectation, it became an instant success.
WASH 94.9 FM’s launch marked a new era in health communication in Nigeria, demonstrating the power of media to drive positive change. The station, indeed, has become a model for other health-focused initiatives, inspiring a new generation of health communicators and promoters.

It is glaring that this pioneering health radio station has made significant impacts on the Nigerian media landscape. The station launched out with the goal of providing direct, accessible, and reliable health information, educating the public on health issues and preventive measures, as well as empowering individuals to make informed decisions for their well-being.
Within the last one year, WASH FM has remained steadfast to its aim of
raising awareness about health challenges, foster community engagement, and promoting dialogue on health-related concerns, including physical, mental, and spiritual well-being.

Inspired by UN-SDG goal six, the station takes its name from the acronym, WASH – Water, Sanitation & Hygiene, hence, the focus on Total Wellness and Health and all the factors supporting Healthy Living on all fronts.
According to the Chief Executive Officer of the station, Engr. Friday Aizeboje, the vision is to be the leading health conversation station without boring the listeners hence the tagline “Fun Health Radio”.
Engr Aizeboje said: “The focus in Health is deliberate. The Board and Management of WASH 94.9 FM see Health as the First and Real Wealth, according to Johann Ilgenfritz, Founder & CEO UK Health Radio which says ‘good health is more than just the absence of illness; it encompasses overall physical, mental, and social well-being.’
“We also believe that access to the highest standard of health is a basic right for all humans, regardless of race, religion, politics, or economic status.
“The emotional and financial burdens of diseases on households are well understood and WASH 94.9 FM is well positioned to work with all stakeholders to minimise the burdens on the people and the economy.
“Our station seek to improve overall public health literacy and support the UN Sustainable Development Goal 3 of ensuring health and well-being for all. It is also to effectively fight misinformation and empower the people with accurate information for good health outcomes.”
As part of its operations, one of WASH 94.9 FM’s unique features is the incorporation of On-Air Telemedicine Services, allowing listeners to access medical advice remotely in a positive way, to take responsibility for own health and be an active part of the process of attaining health freedom.

Some of the seasoned experts featuring on WASH 94.9 FM include Board-certified physicians by the American Board of Internal Medicine in specialties of internal medicine and Geriatric Medicine, Dr Yomi Osunkoya, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Dr Olatunji Idowu, Dr Oluyomi Okunola, a Consultant Physician, and Specialist in kidney diseases, Dr Muhammed – Isa Abdulmejeeb Tosin, a Family Physician.

The station in collaboration with Phlox Health WASH Foundation partnered several stakeholders to organise Breast Cancer Awareness and Screening. Some of the partners are The American Hospital, Lake shore Cancer Center, and the medical women Association, Lagos Chapter.
More than 800 women were screened and those requiring further investigation and follow up action were supported. In 2025, the station was involved in several health outreaches such the World Menstrual Hygiene Day with supports from Maden Foundation and Naza Agape Foundation where Menstrual pads were distributed to girls in seven schools in Lagos State.
The station was involved in Hepatitis Screening and Vaccination, in partnership with the Society for Gastroenterology and Hepatology in Nigeria (SOGHIN), and the Rotary Club of Akute, with 100 persons who tested negative for Hepatitis vaccinated.
WASH 94.9 FM was also at Badagry for the free medical and surgical outreach where over 500 persons received required intervention.
WASH 94.9 FM’s collaboration with Boiling Point Arena, a popular monthly interview discourse, has further expanded its reach.
