Today at 8pm: Falola takes the Hot Seat on Boiling Point, Leads Africa’s Search For Greatness

The stage is set for the 47th edition of the popular monthly interview discourse, Boiling Point Arena, as eminent historian, scholar and public intellectual, Prof Toyin Falola, takes the hot seat leading the conversation on how to free Africa from underdevelopment. The time is 8pm tonight.

Under the theme, “The Africa We Want: Can the Continent Break Free from the Cycle of Underdevelopment?, the discourse promises to go beyond the familiar catalogue of Africas problems to interrogate the deeper forces that have kept the continent struggling to translate its immense potential into broad-based prosperity.

It is a conversation coming at a critical moment when Africa appears unmistakably to be at a crossroads.

The interview discourse is expected to bring Africa’s past, present and future under intense intellectual searchlight, as the continent continues to grapple with the paradox of enormous human and natural resources on the one hand, and persistent poverty, weak institutions, poor governance, conflicts, economic dependency and underdevelopment on the other.

Boiling Point Arena, the once-in-a-month current affairs programme, is hosted by a seasoned media professional and communication strategy expert, Ayo Arowojolu.

To be transmitted via Zoom, the discourse, over a two-hour duration starting from 8pm, will be broadcast live on seven partner radio stations across Lagos, Ogun and Delta States.

Frontline traditional ruler, the Olowu of Owu Kingdom, Oba Prof. Saka Matemilola is the Chairman and Keynote speaker to herald the discourse.

Among the partner radio stations are; WASH 94.9FM, Lagos, Sweet 107.1FM, Abeokuta, Roots 97.1FM, Abeokuta, Erimbe 94.7FM, Shagamu, Women Radio 91.7FM, Mowe, Opera Tune 106.3FM, Abeokuta, and Kruzz 92.9FM, Asaba, Delta State alongside a cable television station, NSTV, on GOtv Channel.

For decades, the continent has been described as the next frontier of global economic growth, yet millions of Africans remain confronted by poverty, unemployment, insecurity, weak infrastructure, poor public services and widening inequality.

Africa possesses some of the world’s most valuable mineral resources, vast agricultural possibilities, a youthful population, enormous cultural capital and a rapidly expanding technology ecosystem. Yet, paradoxically, many of its countries continue to depend heavily on the export of raw materials while importing finished products, technology.

When he mounts the hot seat tonight, Prof. Falola, a distinguished scholar whose work has traversed African history, politics, culture, identity and development, is expected to bring to the conversation the benefit of historical perspective, examining not only where Africa is today, but how it got here.

The discourse is therefore unlikely to be another ritualistic lamentation over colonialism, bad leadership or the failures of the international system. Rather, the central challenge before the discourse is whether Africa can move from diagnosing its problems to designing and implementing solutions.

For Boiling Point Arena, the question is not simply whether Africa is underdeveloped. That much is evident in several dimensions of the continent’s socio-economic reality.

The more difficult question is: What is the escape route?
Can Africa build economies that process its raw materials instead of exporting them cheaply and importing finished goods at significantly higher costs? Can the continent develop education systems that produce innovators, scientists, entrepreneurs and problem-solvers rather than merely certificate holders?

More importantly, can African countries strengthen democratic institutions and governance systems sufficiently to make leadership accountable to citizens? And, can Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation and one of its largest economies, rediscover its capacity to provide intellectual, economic and political leadership for the continent?

These questions become even more significant against the background of Africa’s rapidly changing place in the world. The global order is being reshaped by technology, artificial intelligence, climate change, geopolitical competition, new economic alliances and the race for critical minerals, with Africa sitting on many of the resources that the emerging global economy desperately needs.

Tonight’s Boiling Point conversation is expected to probe that question with particular attention to leadership, institutions, economic transformation, education, technology, industrialization, regional integration, culture and the role of Africans themselves in determining the continent’s destiny.

The platform will also interrogate the psychological and intellectual dimensions of underdevelopment.

For too long, Africa’s development conversation has sometimes been framed primarily around what others have done to the continent. While historical exploitation and the legacy of colonialism remain important parts of the story, the more urgent question today may be what Africans are doing or failing to do with the opportunities available to them.

Can Africa develop a new mindset that rewards production, innovation, merit, accountability and long-term planning? Can the continent escape the politics of short-termism, patronage and elite capture? Can governments begin to think beyond electoral cycles and invest consistently in human capital, infrastructure and institutions? And can ordinary citizens become sufficiently empowered and organised to demand better governance rather than merely adapting to dysfunction?

These are the fault lines that could make tonight’s edition of Boiling Point Arena particularly compelling, even as the conversation also provides an opportunity to revisit the idea of The Africa We Want.

For Prof. Falola, tonight’s conversation offers a formidable intellectual canvas. The historian and scholar is expected to draw from Africa’s past to illuminate its present predicament and, perhaps, challenge the continent to rethink the assumptions that have shaped its development trajectory.

The expectation is that he will not merely tell Africans where they have been but interrogate where they are going and what must change to get them there.

That is precisely the spirit of Boiling Point Arena, a public affairs platform designed to place difficult national and continental questions before knowledgeable voices and allow them to confront the issues without the constraints of conventional sound bites.

From Nigeria’s political and constitutional questions to insecurity, journalism, governance and national redemption, the platform has consistently sought to push public discourse beyond superficial explanations.

Edition 47 now expands that conversation to the continental level. The question tonight is therefore bigger than Nigeria. It is about Africa’s destiny as Prof. Toyin Falola takes the hot seat, with Africa’s past, present and future on the table.
