President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has dismissed criticism of his administration’s performance, saying those who fail to see ongoing progress may need “eyeglasses” to appreciate the government’s achievements.
Speaking at the State House during a meeting with Renewed Hope Ambassadors, Tinubu defended his economic and governance reforms, insisting that his administration remains committed to lifting Nigerians out of poverty and sustaining democracy.
“If they don’t want to see the hope in the roads we build, the children we raise, and the economy we are growing, we will give them eyeglasses,” the president said, in a remark that drew reactions from attendees.
Tinubu described his presidency as a continuation of policies from the administration of his predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari, whom he called a “partner.”
“The truth is I took over from myself. The late Buhari is me, he was a partner. If something is wrong, live with it, correct it and move on,” he said.
The president acknowledged that the country’s economic journey has been difficult but urged Nigerians to remain patient, assuring supporters that the reforms under his “Renewed Hope” agenda would yield long-term benefits.
He also stressed the importance of national unity, warning against actions that could undermine democratic institutions.
Tinubu called for respect for the judiciary and adherence to the rule of law, regardless of political differences.
“We cannot submit to disobedience of a lawful order of the court. We must embrace the judiciary—whether it favours us or not,” he stated.
Tinubu further urged political allies and stakeholders to focus on grassroots mobilisation and data-driven governance, saying coordinated efforts from the ward level would be critical to delivering development.
Reflecting on his political journey, the president said both the party primaries and general election that brought him to power were challenging, but reaffirmed his resolve to stay the course.
“I won’t run away from you. The journey is not easy, but you will not regret it,” he said.
He concluded by reiterating his administration’s commitment to building a united and prosperous Nigeria, calling on citizens to share in a common vision for progress.
