Chairman of the National Population Commission, Dr Aminu Yusuf, is dead.

It was gathered that Yusuf died at Nizamiya Hospital in Abuja after Friday’s Jummah prayer.

He was said to have fallen ill five days ago while preparing for a trip to Rwanda.

It was learnt that the NPC chairman had been suffering from what was described as diabetes-related complications before his reported death.

Yusuf was said to have also reportedly collapsed on a number of occasions at his office and during other public functions.

On March 13, the NPC chairman collapsed during a press briefing and the official launch of the APLS 13 Report.

During the event, he reportedly had difficulty breathing and remained on a sitting position before medical doctors at the event intervened to resuscitate him. He was subsequently taken to a hospital.

Circumstances surrounding his death were still sketchy as of press time.

But Yusuf’s remains, it was learnt, had been transported to Minna, Niger State, for burial on Friday evening.

Yusuf was appointed Chairman of the National Population Commission by President Bola Tinubu in 2025 and was subsequently confirmed by the Senate.

He was sworn in by President Tinubu on December 3, 2025, alongside two other members of the NPC board. The State House identified him as a 65-year-old chairman of the commission at the time of his swearing-in.

The NPC also confirmed that Yusuf formally assumed office as chairman following his swearing-in in Abuja on December 3, 2025.

Yusuf holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and a Master’s degree in International Affairs and Diplomacy from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. He also obtained a doctorate in International Relations from Nasarawa State University, Keffi, according to the State House.

The reported death comes less than a year after Yusuf assumed leadership of the commission, which is responsible for population data and the registration of vital events in Nigeria.

As of the time of filing this report, there was no official statement from the National Population Commission confirming his reported death.
