Police in Kano have launched an investigation into an attack in Rano Local Government Area which claimed the lives of a Divisional Police Officer and a detained suspect, following violence sparked by the suspect’s death in custody.
State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Kiyawa, in a statement on Monday, said the incident began on Sunday night when a motorcycle mechanic, Abdullahi Musa, was arrested for reckless riding and suspected substance abuse.
“Based on public outcry and complaints, Abdullahi Musa was taken into custody for dangerous riding. While in detention, he became weak and was rushed to Rano General Hospital, where he sadly died around 6:00am on May 26 while receiving treatment,” the PPRO said.
Following news of his death, a mob of irate youths reportedly stormed the Rano Police Division, looting parts of the facility, setting two vehicles ablaze, damaging 10 others, and fatally injuring the DPO.
“The DPO was seriously wounded during the attack and was rushed to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital. Unfortunately, he passed away while receiving medical attention,” SP Kiyawa confirmed.
In the aftermath, police arrested 27 suspects believed to have participated in the mob action.
Authorities said peace has been restored in the area.
State Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Bakori, who visited the affected station and the Emir of Rano, Dr. Mohammed Umar, condemned the violence and ordered a full-scale investigation.
He said, “We will thoroughly investigate the remote and immediate causes of these tragic events and ensure justice is served.
“We will not tolerate acts of lawlessness against the police or the community.”
He extended condolences to the family of the deceased officer, describing him as a dedicated officer who died in active service, and urged the public to remain calm.
“The police command is committed to upholding peace and justice in Kano State. We appeal to residents to cooperate with investigators and avoid taking the law into their hands,” Bakori added.
