Police in Ogun have arrested the
Local Government Inspector for the Abeokuta South Local Government Area of the National Youth Service Corps, Abass Olalekan, following the death of a female member of the NYSC on Tuesday.
The deceased corps member identified as Victoria Ariyo, serving under the local government, reportedly died from pregnancy complications.
She allegedly terminated her pregnancy and died from complications that followed the procedure.
A source said Olalekan announced her death verbally and mobilised some corps members to organise her burial. She was reportedly buried at Kobape Cemetery on Kobape-Sagamu Road in Abeokuta.
It was gathered that the LGI was allegedly involved in a romantic relationship with the deceased corps member, which eventually led to pregnancy, and a termination that led to her death.
Ariyo’s death came barely a month after another female corps member, Adeleye Mary, who happens to be her friend, died in what has been described as mysterious circumstances.
Mary, who was serving under the same Abeokuta South LG, was attached to the Ogun State Television (OGTV) as her Place of Primary Assignment (PPA).
A police source confirmed Olalekan’s arrest, saying, “He is in our custody at the command’s headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta.”
But the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, declined to comment once the arrest of the LGI and the alleged involvement.
But the PPRO confirmed that investigations in the death of Victoria Ariyo were ongoing.
“I can confirm that the case of the demise of Victoria Ariyo is under investigation by the State Criminal Investigation Department,” Babaseyi said in a terse statement.
