No fewer than one person has been feared dead while 25 others reportedly sustained gunshot injuries following a violent clash in Ido-Ayegunle, a town between Ijebu-Ijesa and Esa-Oke in Osun State.
It was learnt that the crisis erupted over the weekend after the Osun State Government announced Prince Timileyin Oluyemi Ajayi as the Olojudo of Ido-Ayegunle in Obokun Local Government Area.
The appointment was vehemently opposed by some community members, who argued that the newly appointed monarch was from Ilesa and not a native of the town.
On Monday, the tension escalated, resulting in a violent confrontation.
Sources said suspected hoodlums, who allegedly disguised as security operatives, fired gunshots indiscriminately at residents, resulting in casualties.
Following the violence, residents are now gripped by fear, forcing many of them to flee for safety.
Meanwhile, students of Osun State College of Technology, Esa-Oke, have been placed on high alert as tension spread to neighbouring communities.
Community leaders and residents have called on the state government to intervene urgently to stop the violence.
