Benin Traditional Council, on Friday, announced the suspension of 67 Enigies in the Benin Kingdom.
Their suspension is with immediate effect.
Secretary of the Benin Traditional Council, Frank Irabor, made this known in a statement in Benin.
“This decision was made by Ewuare II, Oba of Benin, due to their alleged anti-palace and rebellious activities against the Oba of Benin and the traditional institution,” the statement said.
Names of the suspended Enigie were attached to the notification for information and necessary follow-up action.
Already, some of the suspended Enigie, including Prof. Gregory Akenzua and Edomwonyi Ogiegbaen, have taken their case to a Benin High Court to challenge their suspension.
They argued that the Oba of Benin lacked the authority to suspend them under the Traditional Rulers and Chiefs Law.
