The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has debunked rumours it has joined calls for Gianni Infantino to step down as FIFA President.
The Nigerian football governing body disclosed its neutral stand in a statement on its X account where it described the news as outright falsehood.
Nigeria is a strong supporter of Infantino and previously praised his leadership on numerous occasions.
However, the Italian administrator has been under pressure following his controversial and now-rested financial proposal that faced backlash from majority of the football community.
The number of European nations calling for his exit has increased in recent days with Norway the latest to join the bandwagon.
However, Infantino has been thrown a life jacket by Mexico and Argentina, but Nigeria has refused to declare its position in the ongoing power tussle in the Zurich-based organization.
However, there are rumours on social media that the NFF has broken its positive outlook towards Infantino and joined calls for his exit, but the NFF quickly shot down the insinuation with a brief statement.
The Ibrahim Gusau-led body asked fans to disregard the rumours, but failed to take sides in the football civil war.
“Contrary to reports, especially on social media,” NFF started, “the Nigeria football federation has never asked and is not asking for FIFA President, Mr. Gianni Infantino to step down as FIFA PRESIDENT. This is outright falsehood. Kindly disregard.”
Infantino is up for re-election in March 2027 at the end of his latest four-year term, but it remains to be seen if the Italian, a former UEFA General Secretary and FIFA Reforms Committee member, will finish his present term in office.
