As part of efforts to promote education, innovation, and youth development in Amuwo-Odofin Constituency II, the Lagos State House of Assembly candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Hon. Thomas Victor Onwubiko (TVO) has launched a free summer empowerment programme for students on long vacation.
The initiative, titled “Free Summer Camp”, is designed to equip children and teenagers with practical skills in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), Robotics, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Coding and Health Management during the ongoing school vacation.
The programme commenced on 3 August 2026 and is scheduled to run until 27 August 2026, with classes holding from Monday to Thursday between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. at 31/41 Olagoke Street, Ijegun Egba, within the premises of the Catholic Church of Resurrection, Satellite Town, Lagos.
According to the organisers, the summer camp is completely free for participating students, with all expenses being personally funded by Hon. Thomas Victor Onwubiko.
Speaking on the initiative, Onwubiko said the programme was conceived to ensure that students spend their vacation productively while acquiring skills that will prepare them for the future digital economy.
“Our children deserve opportunities that will expose them to modern technology and innovative thinking. Instead of allowing the long vacation to pass without meaningful engagement, we decided to create a platform where they can learn STEM, robotics, coding, AI, and health management free of charge,” he said.
He explained that the camp is part of his broader vision of empowering the next generation through education, technology, and human capital development.
Onwubiko noted that the world is rapidly changing and that students who gain exposure to science and technology early in life will be better positioned to compete globally.
“The future belongs to those who understand technology. We want our children in Amuwo-Odofin to be among the innovators, creators, and problem-solvers of tomorrow,” he added.
Parents and guardians who visited the training centre commended the initiative, describing it as timely and beneficial, especially at a period when many families are facing economic challenges.
Some parents expressed appreciation that their children could receive quality training in emerging fields such as artificial intelligence and robotics without paying tuition fees.
The programme features practical sessions, interactive learning, group projects, and mentorship designed to stimulate creativity and critical thinking among participants.
Organisers said trained facilitators are handling the various modules to ensure that students receive hands-on experience rather than purely theoretical instruction.
The summer camp has already attracted students from different parts of Amuwo-Odofin, and organisers say registration remains open for additional participants throughout the vacation period.
Onwubiko encouraged more parents to enrol their children, stressing that the camp offers a rare opportunity for students to develop useful academic and technological skills during the holiday.
“We encourage more students to join these classes instead of wasting valuable time during the vacation. This programme is an investment in their future,” he said.
Education stakeholders in the area have also welcomed the initiative, noting that community-based educational interventions can complement government efforts in improving learning outcomes and digital literacy among young people.
They observed that exposure to STEM, coding, and robotics at an early age can increase students’ interest in science-related careers and enhance their confidence in technology.

As the long vacation continues, the Free Summer Camp is expected to provide hundreds of students with constructive engagement, digital skills, and academic enrichment while keeping them meaningfully occupied throughout the holiday period.
