Navanethem “Navi” Pillay has been awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts to promote peace and international law and ensure that war crimes and genocide are prosecuted.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee noted that the laureate’s exceptional courage and integrity had paved the way towards a more comprehensive global legal order.

Born into a family of Indian Tamil origin in Durban, South Africa, Pillay has served as a judge of the High Court of South Africa, the International Criminal Court and the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda.

She also served as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and recently chaired the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory.

The Nobel Committee called Navi Pillay “one of the great defenders of international legal principles in our time,” noting that her career illustrates the need to strengthen and expand the global rule of law.

While noting that judges deserve praise for guarding the red line between order and chaos, the committee decried the fact that “these same judges are sanctioned, and their institutions are attacked.”

The committee reminded the international community that the rule of law underpins the system established to ensure peace and resolve conflicts non-violently.

The 85-year-old Pillay said she was humbled by the recognition and the reactions it had generated, adding, “You don’t want to receive an award unless the public agrees that you deserve this.”

The lawyer recalled her recent work, which produced a report classifying the situation in Gaza as genocide, a declaration the Nobel team described as courageous.

“Why would you need courage to speak the truth?” Pillay asked. “You interpret the law, you look at all the facts, so it’s an impartial decision-making.”

Francis Halzen, a Belgian physicist, won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics for his decisive contributions to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin.

The 2026 Nobel Prize in Chemistry went to French chemist Henri B. Kagan and a Japanese chemist for their discovery of non-linear effects and autocatalysis in asymmetric organic synthesis.

Karl Deisseroth, an American, and Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel, both Germans, won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their method explaining how nerve cells shape memories and feelings.

The 76-year-old Canadian poet and essayist Anne Carson was awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature for her “bold and inventive oeuvre,” which has created new forms of contemporary literature.
