Police in Libya have arrested a driver in the Bishr area of the country for attempting to smuggle six undocumented female migrants from Nigeria.
The suspect was arrested on Tuesday during a routine police patrol, which intercepted the vehicle.
An organisation that monitors migrant activities, Migrant Rescue Watch, said in a statement that the driver lied to the police that the women were his family members to evade arrest.
But the police were said to have found out the truth, arrested and detained the driver while they took the women into custody.
The driver and the women have however been transferred to the Bishr Police Department in Libya for further legal action while investigation into the case continues.
According to the statement, “Libya 05.08.24 – Police patrols arrested in Bishr area a Libyan driver for an attempted smuggling of 6 undocumented female #migrants of Nigerian nationality. The driver claimed that the female passengers were his family. All transferred to Bishr Police Dept. for legal action.”
