…oppose choice of Yusuf’s new deputy

Following Friday’s resignation of the embattled Kano State Deputy Governor, Comrade Aminu Gwarzo, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf is now faced with a new challenge over his search for a replacement.

Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Ismaila Jibril Falgore, who is reportedly being positioned by Governor Yusuf ahead of the resignation, is said to be one of the leading contenders to replace Gwarzo.

But the All Progressives Congress in the state is said to have thrown its weight behind its 2023 deputy governorship candidate, Murtala Sule Garo, for the vacant office of the deputy governor.

Another major contender eyeing the position is a former Kano State House of Assembly Speaker, Alhassan Rirum, said to have been favoured by majority of the National Assembly members from Kano and his Kano South Senatorial District.

Already, a rift is said to be emerging within the APC between core members loyal to Ganduje and those who defected into the party alongside Governor Yusuf. Ganduje’s loyalists are said to be backing Murtala Sule Garo, insisting he should be compensated with the slot, especially as he has yet to secure any appointment under the Tinubu administration.

But sources claimed that Governor Yusuf has serious reservations for the choice of Garo, as he’s now looking towards the direction of the Assembly Speaker, Ismaila Jibril Falgore who showed loyalty during the governor’s defection to the APC.

However, sources say Kano South Senatorial District, and members of the National Assembly are more interested in a serving member of the House of Representatives, Alhassan Rirum.

On Friday night, the Kwankwasiyya Movement announced the resignation of Comrade Gwarzo as the deputy governor.

Kwankwasiyya Movement in a statement signed by Habibu Muhammad Mailemo, said the decision “though difficult, has been taken in the overall interest of the people and the stability of governance in Kano State.

“Recent circumstances have, to a considerable extent, constrained the full realization of the benefits and responsibilities attached to the office of the Deputy Governor. In view of this, it has become imperative to allow the office to function optimally in the best interest of the public it is meant to serve.” .
