Former President of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan, on Friday, insisted that the result of the 2025 presidential election in Guinea-Bissau must be announced.
Jonathan stated that results of the presidential election had already been collated in the regions of the country and was about to be announced before the incumbent President announced that he had been arrested by the military.
The former Nigerian president, who said it was strange that a sitting President could announce a coup against himself and call press conference at the same time the coup was going on, stressed that the world should know who the winner of the election he described as credible, free and fair, is.
Jonathan stated this while addressing newsmen in Abuja on Friday after his return from the west African nation where he had gone to monitor the election.
Jonathan said, “The elections were done peacefully. I was in the field. I was a part of the West African Elders Forum. We observed within Bissau capital and neighboring settlements.
“During the meeting of all heads of observation missions, they gave accounts. All the observers gave their account. Nobody gave something different. The elections were peaceful. Counting of results were peacefully conducted by the electoral officials, the security the party agents, the voters.
“Good election, and one expected the result to be announced. Then, while they were collating the result, then they finished collating results. Election results are collected at different levels.
“The nine regions, results were ready, so they were collating them at the capital. And when they were almost through, and we were all waiting for the result to be announced, then Emballo announced that they had taken over. They had arrested him, but from all indications, nobody was arrested.
“My charge to ECOWAS and AU, they must announce that result. They have the results because AU and ECOWAS officials were at all the divisions when the results were collated, they cannot change those results.
“They should tally all those results and announce it. They cannot force the military out, but they must announce; let the world know who won that election.”
