EPL: Sturridge warns Alonso after Chelsea’s defeat to Arsenal

Former Chelsea striker Daniel Sturridge has issued a warning to the club’s manager, Xabi Alonso, following the Blues’ 2-1 defeat to Arsenal in the Premier League on Sunday.

The former England international stressed that Alonso must focus on developing a cohesive team rather than relying heavily on his front three.

Chelsea faced their London rivals at the Emirates Stadium, taking the lead in the second minute through Morgan Rogers.

However, Arsenal fought back with goals from Kai Havertz and Martin Odegaard to secure the victory.

Reacting to the defeat, Sturridge said Chelsea were currently too reliant on their attacking trio.

He said on Sky Sports: “They posed a threat to Arsenal at various points, but I believe they are currently very much dependent on the front three.

“The chemistry among the front three is evident, but beyond that, it is clear that there is still work to be done. What Xabi [Alonso] needs to focus on, and what he will need to address, is how to implement the style of play he envisions for the team.

“They won their first two matches and performed admirably today, but I am referring to aspects such as communication, understanding positional play, and knowing the roles of teammates.

“There is still a degree of confusion; it is not yet seamless, and moving forward, they are relying on the front three to secure victories, depending on their individual talents. This approach is not sustainable throughout the entire season,” he added.

The defeat was Chelsea’s first in four competitive games this season, having won their previous three.

Arsenal, meanwhile, have won all three of their matches this season.
