Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has placed the former Edo State governor, Godwin Obaseki, on its watch list.
The anti-graft Agency has also launched an investigation into transactions, including contracts awarded by the Obaseki administration in the state.
Recall that Obaseki, whose eight-year tenure ended on November 12, had raised the alarm that the EFCC planned to arrest him immediately after his tenure ended.
Already, his successor, Governor Monday Okpebholo, has set up a 14-member State Assets Verification Committee to probe the immediate past governor’s tenure.
Also recall that the EFCC had on November 2 arrested five Edo Government officials who served under Obaseki, including the Accountant General, Julius Anelu, over alleged huge withdrawals from the state’s treasury within a short period of time.
Obaseki had however bragged that he was not afraid of a probe by the EFCC.
The former governor said he would be willing to surrender to the anti-graft agency to give an account of his tenure.
But EFCC sources have said so far the bulk of the transactions under Obaseki’s administration had not been directly linked to him.
Efforts to speak with the EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, proved abortive.
Oyewale didn’t pick his calls. Text messages sent to him were also not answered.
