Chelsea: How losing streak, UCL humiliation, team collapse led to Rosenior’s sack

Chelsea sacked head coach Liam Rosenior on Wednesday following a poor run of form that culminated in a 3-0 defeat at Brighton.

The Englishman was snapped from Strasbourg in France’s Ligue 1 to replicate entertaining football brand at Stamford Bridge in a five-and-half year deal.

A fine return of six wins in his first seven matches upon appointment was quickly drowned by ten defeats and unprecedented negative statistics for a Chelsea manager in recent history.

In this piece, we provide a summary of the negative statistics that defined Rosenior’s 107 days as Chelsea manager.

Losing streak

Chelsea lost seven of the last eight matches of Rosenior’s short reign, including a streak of five consecutive league defeats for the first time since 1912, two years before the breakout of World War I. The Blues also suffered three straight home defeats in the league for the first time since 1993, a time when the club also suffered a midseason collapse and also used three managers to navigate the season.

Worst goals drought and leaky defence
Similar to their historic league losing streak, Chelsea failed to score in five consecutive matches for the first time since 1912. Chelsea’s last EPL goal was on March 4 at Aston Villa, and they conceded 11 goals in the sequence. They also lost their last seven matches in the EPL and UCL combined, leaking 19 goals, a far cry to the club’s legendary 2004/05 Chelsea defence that conceded only 15 goals in 38 matches to win the league. Chelsea have also conceded 11 goals from corner kicks this season- seven of them (63%) during Rosenior’s reign- and the tally is a club record high since the 1994/95 season.

European humiliation

Chelsea were surprisingly crowned Club World Cup champions in July 2025 with a 3-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain. However, the UCL winners avenged the shock defeat in devastating fashion, defeating Rosenior’s Chelsea in both legs of their round of 16 clash with an 8-2 aggregate score. It was their joint-worst aggregate defeat in Europe.

The collapse

Chelsea suffered a surprise slump, taking only four points from a possible 24, sliding down the EPL table from fourth place to seventh position. They also suffered seven defeats in their last 10 matches, the most defeats in Europe’s big five leagues since club football returned in March from international break. Additionally, the club kept only four clean sheets in Rosenior’s 23 matches, and no clean sheet in 12 EPL matches is the second longest run in Chelsea’s history.
