CAF restores biennial AFCON format, giving Super Eagles more chances to win title

The Confederation of African Football, CAF, has reversed its earlier decision to stage the Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, every four years, restoring the competition’s traditional two-year cycle in a development that could benefit Nigeria’s Super Eagles.

CAF had announced in December 2025 that the continental tournament would move from a biennial to a four-year format, with a proposed African Nations League expected to occupy the intervening period.

However, following weeks of speculation about a possible reversal, CAF President Patrice Motsepe confirmed earlier this month that the governing body was reconsidering the arrangement.

The organisation officially announced the return to the two-year schedule on Friday, October 30, 2026, explaining that the proposed Nations League would require several years to become financially sustainable and deliver the expected benefits to African football.

In its statement, CAF said the decision was taken to protect the interests of African football, its 54 member associations and players competing for clubs outside the continent.

The governing body also noted that the proposed alternative competition would take time to generate the financial resources and football development benefits needed to make African competitions more competitive globally.

CAF further explained that the AFCON remains an important platform for celebrating the continent’s diverse cultures and bringing together people from Africa, the diaspora and across the world.

The decision is expected to have implications for several national teams, including Nigeria, which have been competing for continental honours under the existing schedule.

What the Decision Means for Nigeria’s Super Eagles

For Nigeria, the restoration of the two-year format provides more frequent opportunities to compete for the continental title after a prolonged wait for another AFCON triumph.

The Super Eagles last won the competition in 2013 in South Africa. Since then, they have finished third at the 2019 edition in Egypt and reached the final in Ivory Coast in 2023, where they lost 2-1 to the host nation.

Under the abandoned four-year arrangement, Nigeria would have faced a longer wait between tournaments.

The restored schedule, however, means the team could have another opportunity to challenge for the trophy in 2031, following the 2027 and 2029 editions, subject to qualification and the competition calendar.

The change could also provide a more regular competitive platform for head coach Eric Chelle as he continues to build and strengthen the national team.

The Franco-Malian tactician is still working to establish his preferred playing system, identify dependable options across different positions and develop a squad capable of competing consistently at the highest level.

More frequent AFCON tournaments could give him additional opportunities to assess his team’s progress, test tactical approaches and make adjustments against strong continental opposition.

The arrangement may also benefit emerging players seeking to establish themselves in the national team. Young talents such as George Ilenikhena and Benjamin Fredrick could have more opportunities to develop into key members of the squad ahead of future continental competitions.

However, Nigeria’s immediate priority remains securing qualification for the 2027 AFCON, which will be jointly hosted by Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania.

The Super Eagles currently face a difficult qualification campaign, with Guinea-Bissau three points ahead of them following a reported 3-0 defeat inflicted on Nigeria in their previous meeting.

With Tanzania already assured of participation as co-hosts, the qualification contest remains particularly challenging for Nigeria, as only one additional team from the group is expected to secure a place at the tournament.

Chelle and his players will therefore need to deliver strong performances in their remaining fixtures to avoid missing out on the next continental championship.

While CAF’s latest decision does not guarantee Nigeria a return to the top of African football, it restores more regular opportunities for the Super Eagles to compete for the title and gives the national team a clearer long-term tournament schedule.
