Malawi’s selection of a Cabinet minister’s daughter to represent the country at the Miss World pageant has triggered controversy after she replaced the reigning Miss Malawi.
Thandi Chisi, who won the Miss Malawi crown in Lilongwe on December 13, was initially expected to carry the country’s flag at the international competition.
Instead, the Miss Malawi Organisation selected first runner-up Ireen Navicha for the Miss World contest in Vietnam.
Navicha is the daughter of Malawi’s Cabinet Minister Mary Navicha.
The connection has intensified scrutiny of the decision and prompted questions over whether the selection process was transparent and fair.
The organisers initially attributed Chisi’s removal to an eligibility issue.
They said she was above the age limit for the international competition.
That explanation, however, became a fresh source of controversy after reports indicated that Chisi would be 27 during the Miss World pageant, which falls within the stated age range of 17 to 27.
Faced with mounting questions over the discrepancy, the Miss Malawi Organisation apologised for the confusion over the age requirement, according to its chief executive officer, Benedette Mweso.
Mweso reportedly said she took “full responsibility for causing the age eligibility confusion.”
The explanation has not ended the dispute, however, as the pageant’s principal sponsor, Goshen City, offered a different account of why Navicha was selected.
The sponsor said the decision reflected a new approach aimed at creating opportunities for all finalists, while also pointing to Navicha’s international experience.
The conflicting explanations have deepened questions surrounding the change, particularly because the replacement involved a contestant whose mother serves in Malawi’s Cabinet.
Chisi’s displacement also means the country’s reigning national titleholder will not be the contestant representing Malawi at the global pageant.
Such an outcome has drawn attention beyond the competition itself.
The dispute has consequently shifted from a beauty pageant decision to broader questions about how national representatives are selected and whether contestants receive equal treatment after competing in a national contest.
For the organisers, the competing explanations have placed the emphasis on eligibility, opportunities for finalists and international experience.
For critics, the circumstances surrounding the replacement have raised concerns about the credibility of the selection process.
The controversy now puts the spotlight on the Miss Malawi Organisation and its explanation of how the final decision was reached.
