Bauchi women, CSOs withdraw endorsement for Shehu Buba over running mate’s selection

From Baban Khalid, Bauchi

A coalition of women groups, civil society organisations (CSOs), community-based organisations (CBOs), youth groups and other stakeholders in Bauchi State has announced the withdrawal of its endorsement and organised support for the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) governorship candidate for the 2027 election, Senator Shehu Buba Umar.

The coalition, however, reaffirmed its loyalty and support for Hajiya Baheejah Mahmood Abdullahi, who was among those considered for the party’s deputy governorship ticket.

In a statement signed by Hajiya Halima Nuhu Mohammed, the coalition said the decision followed what it described as the unilateral selection of Senator Shehu Buba’s running mate without meaningful consultation with key stakeholders, particularly women who had consistently demanded fair representation and inclusion in the process.

According to the statement, the coalition’s support for the senator was based on the expectation that justice, inclusiveness, consultation and equity would guide major political decisions.

“Unfortunately, the process leading to the selection of his deputy failed to reflect these values and ignored the legitimate aspirations of women across Bauchi State who worked tirelessly for the success of the project,” the statement said.

The groups stressed that while they respected Senator Shehu Buba’s constitutional right to make political decisions, they equally reserved the democratic right to review their support when such decisions no longer aligned with the values and expectations of those they represent.

The coalition described Hajiya Baheejah Mahmood Abdullahi as “a woman of substance, courage, integrity and exceptional leadership,” praising her commitment to women, children, vulnerable persons and grassroots development.

It noted that Abdullahi had played a significant role in establishing the Bauchi State Orphans and Vulnerable Children Agency during the administration of former Governor Isa Yuguda and had earned widespread support through years of humanitarian and community service.

The groups further stated that many stakeholders believed her emergence as the deputy governorship candidate would have strengthened the party’s political structure, promoted gender inclusion, expanded grassroots support and improved its chances in the 2027 governorship election.

Despite the setback, the coalition urged Abdullahi not to be discouraged and encouraged her to continue championing justice, equity and good governance.

“We assure her that wherever her political journey leads, we shall stand firmly beside her. Whatever lawful and democratic path she chooses in pursuit of the progress of Bauchi State and the empowerment of its people, especially women, children and the vulnerable, she can count on our total support, loyalty and commitment,” the statement added.

The coalition maintained that its movement was founded on the principles of justice, inclusion, competence and service rather than personalities, pledging to continue advocating for a Bauchi State where merit is rewarded, women are recognised as equal partners in leadership and every citizen has the opportunity to contribute to the state’s development.
