Bauchi State Independent Electoral Commission (BASIEC) has completed all plans to conduct another round of local council elections one year after the last elected Councils were dissolved by Governor Bala Abdukadir Mohammed.
BASIEC Chairman, Ahmed Makama, who revealed this while briefing journalists in his office on Friday, declared that the elections will hold on Saturday, August 10, 2024 across the state.
According to him, “In accordance with the relevant laws, BASIEC hereby gives 60 days notice for the conduct of the local government council elections in Bauchi State.
“If you calculate 60 days from today, it will be 6th August which is not a Saturday, and, elections are usually conducted on Saturdays. We have therefore moved the election to Saturday, 10th of August 2024.”
The BASIEC Chairman called on political parties and other stakeholders interested in the conduct of the election to start the processes which will culminate in its smooth conduct.
Makama assured that the Commission is prepared to deliver free, fair and acceptable elections, which will make Bauchi State a leader in the conduct of local government council polls in the country.
He added that the Commission will rely on the voters register by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), stressing that “BASIEC does not keep its own register of voters.”
The BASIEC Chairman added, “With this announcement, the process of selling of nomination forms has commenced and interested people are urged to come out to purchase the forms.”
He, however, reminded the politicians that open campaigns have not started until 30 days to the date of the elections as stipulated in the law.
