. Condemn Ashiru’s gov certificate of return, vows to block submission of his name to INEC

KADUNA, NIGERIA — The internal crisis currently rocking the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Kaduna State took a dramatic turn this week as a coalition supporting one of the leading governorship aspirants rejected the party’s sudden declaration of a flagbearer.
On Wednesday, the Coalition of Hon. Idris Shuaibu Abubakar Mikati, backed by the Kaduna State ADC Youth Vanguard and various support groups across all 23 local government areas, fiercely condemned the national secretariat’s decision to award the Certificate of Return to Hon. Isa Ashiru.
The move has thrown the party’s preparations for the 2027 governorship election into significant turmoil, with the Mikati faction labeling the action “illegal” and “procedurally flawed.”
A Deepening Internal Rift
The dispute originates from the party’s primary election held in May 2026. At the time, the Primary Election Committee declared Ashiru the winner, asserting that he secured 86,113 votes.
However, that declaration was quickly challenged. Four aggrieved aspirants, including Mikati, petitioned the ADC Electoral Appeal Committee—a body formally set up by the party’s National Working Committee (NWC).
Led by Dr. Mustapha Fagge, the Appeal Committee reviewed security agency reports, auxiliary documents, and formal advice from the party’s legal team, including the National Legal Adviser.
The panel ultimately overturned Ashiru’s victory and declared Mikati the rightful and authentic governorship candidate.
Despite the panel’s conclusion, the Mikati coalition reveals that the NWC had failed to meet to ratify the appeal report, allegedly claiming its hands were full with electoral disputes from other states.
The coalition further alleged that the NWC had not held an official administrative meeting for over six months.
Allegations of Administrative Impunity
The issuance of the Certificate of Return to Ashiru on October 4, 2026, without formal NWC or National Executive Committee (NEC) ratification, has sparked outrage.
The Mikati camp claims the administrative desk at the National Secretariat acted ultra vires—beyond its legal authority—to create a forced conclusion ahead of the 2027 elections.
“How can a party establish an internal dispute mechanism and then ignore its own verdict?” the coalition questioned in their joint statement.
“This action by the administrative desk is a betrayal of internal democracy, a violation of the ADC Constitution, and a direct assault on the will of lawful delegates.”
Warning of a permanent factionalisation within the Kaduna State branch of the party, the coalition outlined five key demands and declarations:
- Total Rejection: They declared the Certificate of Return issued to Ashiru as null, void and of no legal effect.
- Affirmation of Mandate: The coalition reaffirmed Mikati as the only authentic ADC candidate for the 2027 Kaduna governorship race.
- Call for Reversal: They urged the national leadership to immediately reverse the “administrative error,” call an emergency NWC meeting, and uphold the Fagge-led committee’s report.
- Legal Action: The group confirmed that Mikati has filed a lawsuit at the Federal High Court in Maitama, Abuja, to protect his mandate.
The Looming Legal Battle
With the matter now headed to court, the coalition warned the party’s national leadership that the legal doctrine of lis pendens (a pending lawsuit) is firmly in effect. They cautioned that any attempt to submit Ashiru’s name to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) while the lawsuit is active would face severe legal consequences and inevitable nullification.
As the political atmosphere in Kaduna intensifies, the Mikati leadership has appealed to its teeming supporters, elders, and youths across both Southern and Northern Kaduna to remain calm and law-abiding, expressing absolute confidence that the courts will restore their mandate.
