…as court grants Oba N5m bail
Police in Ogun, on Tuesday, arraigned the suspended Olorile of Orile Ifo, Semiu Adewale Ogunjobi, for assaulting a 73-year-old chief, Abraham Areola.
The monarch, who has already been suspended for six months by the Ogun State Government, was arraigned on three counts bordering on conspiracy, assault and conduct likely to cause breach of peace.
Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, confirmed this in a statement on Tuesday.
He said, “The Kabiyesi Abdulsemiu Ogunjobi, who assaulted one elderly man in a viral video, in Ifo Ogun State, has been charged to court today February 4, 2025, on a three-count of conspiracy, assault and conduct likely to cause breach of peace.
“He was granted bail while the case was adjourned to 06/03/2025.”
The police spokesperson vowed that justice would be served on the matter.
“The police will continue to uphold the rule of law and the core values of the noble profession,” Adejobi said.
It was gathered that the monarch was granted bail on liberal terms of N5million with two sureties in like sum.
The case has been adjourned to March 6 for a hearing.
On Monday, the Ogun State Government, in collaboration with the Egba Traditional Council, suspended the traditional ruler.
Recall that Oba Ogunjobi, a former police officer, was captured in a viral video physically assaulting the old man alongside his accomplices, whose faces were also not captured in the video.
In the video, the monarch accused Areola of being an alleged betrayer with one Wasiu while raining curses on the old man and his family.
The Oba threatened to bury the old man him without traces if he died during the torture.
Oba Ogunjobi, who has earlier denied being the person in the video, according to the Committee for Human Rights, confessed at the Eleweran headquarters of Ogun State police command.
He was also said to be begging the victim with a plot of land.
The Oba was said to be using his influence as a former police officer and that of his wife, identified as Officer Veronica, serving at FCID, Alagbon, to threaten the peace of Orile Ifo.
