Embattled Senator representing Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, on Tuesday, dragged Senate President Godswill Akpabio to the United Nations Inter-Parliamentary Union over her allegations of sexual harassment and the consequent six-month suspension.
Natasha, who spoke at the Women in Parliament session at the United Nations in New York, informed the IPU of her alleged victimisation by Akpabio.
The embattled Senator, in an emotion-laden speech, demanded justice and global democratic institutions to intervene.
She said her suspension from the Senate was “unlawful” and constituted an act of injustice against her.
She also expressed concerns for her safety, claiming that “the powers that be” in Nigeria might attempt to detain her for speaking out on the issue at the global event in New York.
Early March, the Nigerian Senate announced Senator Natasha’s suspension following recommendations from its Committee on Ethics, Rules, and Code of Conduct.
Following her suspension, she will not receive a salary, will be barred from entering the National Assembly premises, and will not be allowed to refer to herself as a senator for the six-month period.
