AFCON: ‘We just beat them’ – Simon on North African teams causing Nigeria problems

Super Eagles player Moses Simon has disagreed with the notion that North African teams are a danger to the Super Eagles in the Africa Cup of Nations.

He also said that Nigeria is not looking for revenge against their quarterfinal opponents, Algeria.

Nigeria played against the Desert Foxes in the semifinals of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations held in Egypt and lost with a score of 2-1.

They then went on to win the bronze medal in the third-place match.

During the press conference, the Paris FC winger said there’s no talk about revenge, and stressed that the Super Eagles are concentrating on staying mentally strong and keeping their performance consistent.

“We don’t think about revenge at all. We just want to play,” he said.

“We are a group that works every day to move forward and achieve victory because of our mindset.”

He added, “I can’t say the North African teams are the ones giving us problems because we, too, give them problems. We just beat them.”

The 30-year-old points to the Super Eagles’ 3-2 win against Tunisia in the group stage as proof of their strong performance.

“I think the last game we played against the Tunisian team was a good one. The Tunisian team is definitely one of the top teams in Africa.

“So it’s not the right time to discuss whether teams are important or not, because every team is really strong in this competition,” he added.

“You can see all the African teams now; they are doing well and have made a lot of progress. So there are no small teams, and no big teams anymore.

Simon, who was one of the players who saw Nigeria lose to Algeria in 2019, wants Nigeria to win and go to the semifinals.
