Super Eagles midfielder, Alex Iwobi, has made more passes that broke opponents defence line than any other player at the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, according to Opta’s statisticians.

Iwobi has made 36 passes that broke lines during the knockout rounds of the tournament – the most by any player at this stage of the competition.
His total shows he made 22 line-breaking passes in Nigeria’s Round of 16 game against Mozambique and 14 more in the quarter-final match against Algeria.
The Fulham midfielder took part in Nigeria’s 4-0 win against Mozambique. His passing from the midfield helped the team move the ball through the center effectively.
His role in helping the team progress was very important as the Super Eagles reached the quarter-final stage.
Earlier in the tournament, Iwobi helped set up two goals for Nigeria in their first group-stage match against Tanzania.
Against Algeria, he achieved a milestone that will be remembered, matching a Nigerian record shared by former Super Eagles players Austin Okocha, Muda Lawal, and John Obi Mikel.
Among Nigerian midfielders who have played in the Africa Cup of Nations, Iwobi, Okocha, Mikel and Lawal all have the same record for the most appearances, with each playing in 22 matches.
Iwobi is on track to break the record soon. If he plays in Nigeria’s semifinal against Morocco’s Atlas Lions, his total number of Africa Cup of Nations appearances will reach 23 across four tournaments.
Iwobi took part in seven matches at Afcon 2019 and seven matches at Afcon 2023. He also played four matches at Afcon 2021 and four matches at Afcon 2025.
