Nigeria have become the third country to qualify for the semi-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The Super Eagles outclassed Algeria 2-0 on Saturday, to progress into the next round of the competition.
Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams scored two quick-fire goals in the second half, to seal an emphatic victory in Marrakech.
So, what did we learn from the game?
1. Osimhen puts the criticism behind him: Following his spat with Ademola Lookman against Mozambique, there was a lot of criticism fired in Osimhen’s direction. The Galatasaray striker kept mute since that game, but did his talking on the pitch. Osimhen opened the scoring with a sensational header, before unselfishly setting up Adams. Interestingly, he ended the game wearing the captain’s armband.
2. Best Nigerian display: It will not be an exaggeration to state that this is one of the best performances from the national team in a very long time. The Eagles came out from the blast of the whistle and swarmed all over Algeria with their high pressing, forcing mistakes and creating chances. Alex Iwobi was at his brilliant best again, pulling all the strings in midfield.
3. Ndidi injury: One of the downsides of this win, is the injury suffered by captain Wilfred Ndidi late in the game. With the next fixture coming up in a matter of days, the midfielder is unlikely to recover to play. His absence would be a huge blow for the Eagles, as they would miss his steady presence and leadership.
4. Morocco next: From one North African side to another. This time around, it will be the hosts Morocco in the semi-finals. The Atlas Lions have muscled their way into the last four, powered by the boisterous home support and the talismanic Brahim Diaz. Nigeria have to be on top of their game, if they would stand any chance of qualifying for back-to-back AFCON finals.
