All Progressives Congress has petitioned the Inspector General of Police, Tunji Disu, and the Director General, Department of State Services, seeking the arrest, investigation and prosecution of a self-declared governorship candidate in Ogun State, Mr. Abayomi Hunye, for impersonation.
On Monday, the APC issued a statement disowning Hunye while describing his earlier self-declaration as the governorship candidate of the party in Ogun State in the 2027 general elections as a mischief.
Earlier, Hunye had at an event in Abeokuta, the state capital, made a unilateral declaration as the party’s governorship candidate and also presented one Chief Abayomi Odunowo as his “running mate” for the APC ticket in Ogun in the 2027 election.
But the ruling party, in separate petitions dated August 24, addressed to the IGP and the DSS DG, called on both security agencies to restrain Hunye from further parading himself as its governorship candidate in Ogun to prevent a total breakdown of law and order in the state. Both petitions are signed by the APC Director of Administration, Áyoola Olajolo.
The APC petitions stated, “I write to bring to your urgent attention a grave threat to public peace and electoral integrity involving one Mr. Abayomi Hunye (hereinafter referred to as “the Subject”).
“The Subject has notoriously and unlawfully taken to the public domain, including print and social media, parading himself as the governorship candidate of our party for the forthcoming January 2027 election.
“I wish to state unequivocally that this claim is false, fraudulent, and a deliberate act of impersonation designed to mislead the public and destabilise the peace of Ogun State.”
The petitions stressed that on April 7, 2026, Hunye was validly suspended from the APC following a written petition from his Tube Ward in Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun State.
According to the party, Hunye’s suspension was then ratified by the Ogun State Working Committee and formally communicated to the national headquarters.
The APC further stated that it conducted a valid primary election in Ogun, and its only governorship candidate and his running mate in the state are Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola and Mrs Balogun Abiodun.
The APC petition added, “In view of the foregoing, I most respectfully pray that you use your good office to direct the immediate intervention of the Nigeria Police Force to:
“Invite Mr. Abayomi Hunye for immediate questioning regarding the aforementioned infringements and probable commission of offences against Nigerian Laws.
“Cause him to be prosecuted after investigation for impersonation, conduct likely to cause a breach of peace, and violation of the Electoral Act, 2026.
“Restrain him from further parading himself as a candidate to prevent a total breakdown of law and order in Ogun State.
“I pledge the full cooperation of the APC National Headquarters and the Ogun State chapter of our party with the police during the investigation and are ready to provide further witness statements as may be required.”
It was gathered that attempts by the police and the DSS to invite Hunye for interrogation failed as he was said to have gone into “hiding” when the agencies’ operatives visited his home to deliver invitation letter.
But Hunye in his reaction told our correspondent that contrary to media reports that he’s on the run, he had been available and just waiting for the scheduled dates to honour both security agencies’ invitations.
Hunye said, “But somebody was saying they came to my house and I jumped the fence. They even said it’s you that’s saying that. Why won’t I honour it? How can I be on the run? If somebody invited me for September, I’ll be running now? The question is have they visited my house?
“I heard that they’re saying they came to my house and I jumped the fence. How can I be on the run? I’m invited for September and I’ll definitely honour it.”
