Barcelona president Joan Laporta has confirmed that the club has made a special request to UEFA.
Laporta was speaking on Friday as he addressed the delays in returning to the Camp Nou.
According to him, Barça asked UEFA to schedule their first Champions League game away from home.
Under UEFA rules, a club is not allowed to use two different venues as home stadiums.
This could thwart Barcelona’s hopes of playing all four games of the league phase at the Camp Nou.
The LaLiga giants had initially planned a return to their iconic stadium in late 2024, but this was eventually pushed back.
They were confident of hosting the Joan Gamper friendly game on August 10, having received approval for the modification of the Activity and Construction Licences.
However, they have not yet been granted the First Occupancy Licence from the City Council, which prompted the club to move the Joan Gamper game against Como to the Estadi Johan Cruyff.
In an interview with Mundo Deportivo, Laporta said: “What we’ve asked UEFA is to allow us to play the first game away from home. The draw is on August 28, and we’ll see then. I hope UEFA allows us to play away.”
