Catholic Church has elected a new Pope and leader.
He is American-born Cardinal Robert Prevost, who is also a seasoned Vatican official.
The new Catholic Pontiff is taking the name Leo XIV.
The announcement was made from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica on Thursday, following the traditional white smoke signaling the successful conclusion of the papal conclave.
Sixty-nine-year old Prevost becomes the first American-born Pope in the Church’s over 2000-year history and his election marks a significant moment for Catholics in the United States and around the world.
Prevost succeeds Pope Francis, who died on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88.
Pope Leo XIV, who hails from Chicago, Illinois,
is a member of the Order of St. Augustine. He is widely respected for his quiet but firm leadership style, deep theological grounding and global pastoral experience.
Prevost was appointed Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops in 2023 to oversee the selection and supervision of bishops around the world.
