…as university produces 125 medical graduands

The Governing Council of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, has reiterated its commitment to build and upgrade facilities at the College of Health Sciences, Nnewi.l, Anambra State.

Speaking at the weekend during the 54th induction ceremony of 125 medical graduands at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Barrister Olugbenga Kukoyi said this was in line with the policy direction of the Federal Ministry of Education and the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Visitor to the University, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.

He said, “As I said during my familiarisation tour, having seen and interacted with the management, members of staff and students of the university both in Awka and Nnewi, it is imperative that we do something fast to build the requisite infrastructure that will bring the Nnewi campus close to, if not at par with the Awka campus.

“While we commit to the upgrading, rehabilitation, and renovation of infrastructure in the university – in line with the policy direction of the Federal Ministry of Education and the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Visitor to this great university, His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, we have already struck a deal with the management of the university that they would do their utmost best to promote a culture of maintenance of the existing facilities in the university.

“Gone were the days when institutions would be crying for more funding and projects while leaving the existing ones to rot away without any care or maintenance simply because they are public facilities. We have to take ownership of them and maintain them.”

Kukoyi congratulated the management of the university, the graduands and their parents on the successful completion of the programme, culminating in the induction of 125 doctors into the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCAN).

He urged them to go out their and prove their mettle as worthy ambassadors of the university.

The ceremony was attended by the acting Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Joseph Ikechebelu; the Chief Medical Director of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Prof. Joseph Ugboaja; the Provost, College of Health Sciences, Prof. Jude-Kennedy Emejulu, a Medical Elder, Emeritus Prof. Joseph Adinma and a representative of the Registrar/CEO of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), Dr. Fatima Kyari, who administered the Medical Oath on the graduands.
