2026 World Cup: Finally, FIFA dashes Nigeria’s hopes, confirms DR Congo for play-offs

Nigeria’s Super Eagles’ hopes of featuring at the 2026 FIFA World Cup have been effectively dashed after the world football governing body confirmed the final six teams for the inter-confederation play-off tournament, listing DR Congo as Africa’s sole representative.

FIFA, in an accreditation notice circulated to journalists ahead of the competition, outlined the format of the play-off tournament and listed the participating countries without Nigeria. This development signals the end of the Super Eagles’ appeal to overturn their defeat in the CAF play-offs in November 2025.

Nigeria Football Federation had lodged a formal protest following Nigeria’s elimination by Democratic Republic of the Congo. The decisive tie ended 1-1 before Nigeria lost on penalties.

The NFF alleged that DR Congo fielded ineligible players during the encounter and sought to have the result overturned.

The petition aimed to secure Nigeria’s reinstatement into the inter-continental play-offs, a last pathway to qualification for the expanded 2026 tournament.

But FIFA’s latest communication made no reference to any disciplinary ruling or amendment to the qualified teams — strongly indicating that the original result stands.

FIFA in its statement said, “The FIFA World Cup 2026 Play-Off Tournament will see six teams fight it out for the final two places at the FIFA World Cup 2026™, to be staged in Canada, Mexico and the United States across 16 Host Cities.

“All of the six teams have now been decided, with Bolivia, Congo DR, Iraq, Jamaica, New Caledonia and Suriname confirmed as qualifiers.”

FIFA’s confirmation effectively closes the curtain on Nigeria’s qualification campaign, marking a major setback for a nation with a rich World Cup history. Nigeria’s Super Eagles had hoped the appeal would revive their chances, but the absence of any revision from FIFA ends that possibility.

With the release of the final play-off list, attention now shifts to the inter-confederation tournament, where the six teams will compete for the last two available slots at the 2026 World Cup.
