The News Department of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Abeokuta, has organised capacity-building training for its staff as part of efforts to enhance professional competence and strengthen newsroom efficiency.
The training session, facilitated by retired Assistant Director of News, Ilorin, Yemi Akintunde, focused on contemporary journalism practices, ethical standards, and effective news presentation in a rapidly evolving media landscape. Participants were also exposed to practical strategies aimed at improving storytelling techniques, ensuring accuracy, and deepening audience engagement.
Addressing participants, Mr. Akintunde underscored the importance of credibility, objectivity, and professionalism, describing them as the enduring pillars of broadcast journalism.
He stressed the need for synergy within news teams, highlighting that effective news production requires seamless collaboration among reporters, cameramen, and even drivers, whose roles he noted are critical to successful field operations.
The veteran broadcaster also advised journalists to dress appropriately in line with the nature of their assignments, noting that appearance contributes significantly to professionalism and public perception.
In addition, Mr. Akintunde refreshed participants’ knowledge on various camera shots and movements, explaining their relevance and application in enhancing television news production.
He further emphasised the need for greater focus on human angle stories, urging reporters to tell compelling stories that resonate with audiences and reflect real-life experiences.
Drawing from his years of service, he shared practical insights and experiences from the field, reinforcing key lessons on ethical reporting and newsroom discipline.
