… says ‘he destroyed ruling APGA during his tenure’

Anambra State Government, on Monday, moved against the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress, warning the electorate not to vote for him in the forthcoming 2027 general elections.

The Anambra government accused Obi, a former governor of the state of destroying the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance in the state during his eight-year tenure.

According to the state government in a statement on its official X account, managed by the office of the New Media to Governor Charles Soludo, the NDC presidential flagbearer destroyed APGA in Anambra while President Bola Tinubu made efforts to defend to defend the opposition party.

The state government, in a graphic branding Obi as a betrayal, wrote, “A betrayal alert for Ndi APGA. Since 2014, Obi has had one mission: to destroy the party that made him.

“In 2015, while President Tinubu stood with APGA, Obi backed the opposition to bury us. Do not be deceived by a man who abandoned his own house. Anambra is APGA. Ndi APGA, defend your home, resist the NDC.’’

Recall, in 2025, Soludo said that he was backing President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 elections.

The incumbent Anambra governor said his support is grounded in a 22-year friendship and the President’s bold economic reforms.

While addressing newsmen after meeting Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Soludo said his support remained firm despite his membership of the opposition APGA.

“President Tinubu is my friend; he has been my friend for 22 years now and counting, so you don’t deny your friend. I support him, and I’m impressed by the bold steps he has taken, particularly in the economy and structural reforms. We’re taking the right steps, and we need to stay the course,” he said.

Soludo said Tinubu was “in high spirits, hale and hearty”, urging political parties that identify as progressives to form a broad coalition to strengthen democracy and drive economic and social development.

Similarly, in July, Governor Soludo’s party, APGA, endorsed President Bola Tinubu as its preferred candidate for the 2027 general elections.

APGA National Publicity Secretary, Ejimofor Opara, who disclosed this, said the absence of the party’s presidential candidate’s name on the Independent National Electoral Commission nomination portal should not be interpreted as a failure to comply with electoral guidelines.

Opara said the party’s leadership had already resolved to back Tinubu’s re-election bid after what he described as extensive consultations within its ranks.

According to him, APGA’s National Executive Committee reached the decision, concluding that supporting the President’s second-term ambition was in the overall interest of the country.

Recently, Obi and Soludo disagreed over the financial obligations associated with projects implemented during Obi’s tenure as Anambra governor.

Responding to the issues, Obi said he had remained silent in recent days because he was mourning his late elder brother and friend, Chief Okey Ezeibe, adding that he was not interested in returning to the governorship, even if the Constitution were amended.

He rejected the characterisation of the facilities as “debt owed by Peter Obi”, saying they were primarily World Bank and International Fund for Agricultural Development programmes negotiated by the Federal Government and accessed by participating states through subsidiary arrangements.

He said the figures being cited should be separated into the amount approved, the amount actually drawn and the balance outstanding when he left office.

“The government has combined these distinct categories, added them together, and described the resulting US$123.77 million as ‘loans left by Peter Obi.’ That is an incorrect application of public-sector accounting”, he argued.

Obi further maintained that he did not personally approach any financial institution to borrow funds or issue a bond on behalf of the state.

Meanwhile, neither Obi nor any member of his team has reacted to the state government’s recent claim of betrayal as of the time of filing this report.
