What a nightmare! What an unbelievable loss. The news of Dotun Oladipo, popularly called DOT by friends, at 56, left me shocked and deeply saddened. Some departures come without warning and leave the living struggling for words.
Dot was a committed journalist and publisher, a man whose professional journey spanned the traditional newsroom and the emerging digital media space. Through The Eagle Online and his leadership in the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers, he contributed to the growth and organisation of Nigeria’s online journalism.
Our encounters were occasional, but our conversations were often thoughtful and illuminating. He was a man of substance, professional resilience and quiet conviction.
The Yoruba have a beautiful expression for such a departure: “Ìyẹ̀ la máa wò, ẹyẹ ti fò lọ.” The bird has flown, but we shall continue to admire its feather.
DOT has flown. His work, memories and contribution remain.
May God grant his family the strength to bear this painful loss, and may his soul rest in peace.
