Today on BoilingPoint: Erelu Tunwase, Adedayo, Kuna Debate Nigeria’s Post-2027 Future

The countdown ends today, Sunday, August 9, 2026 as the 46th edition of Boiling Point Arena takes the nation into one of the most consequential political conversations ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Under the thought-provoking theme, “2027 and Beyond: Is This Nigeria’s Final Window for National Redemption?”, the monthly public affairs discourse will bring together three distinguished voices to interrogate Nigeria’s political direction, democratic journey and the choices that could determine the country’s future beyond 2027.

The edition which is a Zoom conversation starting from 8pm tonight comes at a particularly significant moment when political calculations, realignments and conversations about the future of Nigeria are beginning to dominate the national space.

But beyond the familiar permutations about who will contest, who will defect, who will form alliances and which political platform will prevail, today’s Boiling Point encounter seeks to ask a deeper question: What kind of Nigeria are citizens actually trying to build through the 2027 elections?

Will 2027 merely produce another change of political actors, or can it become a turning point in the nation’s search for competent, accountable and visionary leadership?

The three discussants — Erelu Tunwase Lola Ayonrinde, former Mayor of the London Borough of Wandsworth; Dr. Festus Adedayo, popular Columnist and fearless Political Commentator; and Prof. Muhammad Kuna, Political Sociologist at the Federal University, Kashere, Gombe State — are expected to approach the subject from different but complementary perspectives.

The interview discourse hosted by a veteran journalist and public relations strategist, Dr Ayo Arowojolu, will also be broadcast live on seven partner radio stations across Lagos, Ogun and Delta States.

The conversation will inevitably examine the lessons of previous elections, the performance of democratic institutions, the growing demand for political accountability and the extent to which Nigerians have become more discerning about the choices presented to them at the ballot box.

It will also interrogate the emerging political realignments ahead of 2027 and whether the current atmosphere signals the possibility of a new political order or merely another cycle of familiar promises.

For Boiling Point Arena, however, the central issue is bigger than the 2027 presidential contest as it deliberately pushes the conversation beyond personalities and electoral calculations to the Nigeria that should emerge after the votes are counted.

What happens to democracy when elections are won but citizens remain disillusioned? Can Nigeria continue to afford leadership choices based predominantly on ethnicity, religion, personality and political patronage? Can electoral reforms, stronger institutions and citizen participation finally produce a democracy that delivers tangible dividends?

And perhaps the most uncomfortable question: If 2027 fails to provide a credible pathway to national renewal, how much longer can Nigeria wait?

These questions assume greater significance against the backdrop of the country’s persistent security challenges, economic pressures, youth unemployment, institutional weaknesses and growing public frustration with governance.

Yet today’s discourse is not intended to be another pessimistic lament about Nigeria. Rather, it is an attempt to confront the country’s challenges honestly while examining whether the nation still possesses the institutional capacity, democratic resilience and citizen energy required to change its trajectory.

The 46th edition of Boiling Point Arena therefore promises to be less about predicting who wins in 2027 and more about determining what Nigerians should demand from those seeking their votes — and what citizens themselves must do differently.

As Nigeria approaches another defining electoral cycle, the question tonight is deliberately provocative: Is 2027 merely another election, or is it the window through which Nigeria must finally walk into a different political future?

Frontline traditional ruler, the Olowu of Owu Kingdom, Oba Prof Saka Matemilola, will herald the discourse with a keynote speech.

Among the partner radio stations are; WASH 94.9FM, Lagos, Sweet 107.1FM, Abeokuta, Roots 97.1FM, Abeokuta, Erimbe 94.7FM, Shagamu, Women Radio 91.7FM, Mowe, Opera Tune 106.3FM, Abeokuta, and Kruzz 92.9FM, Asaba, Delta State alongside a cable television station, NSTV, on GOtv Channel.
