… demand creation of Police Pension Board

Seun Shotunde, Abeokuta

Retired Officers under the Police Retired Officers Forum of Nigeria (PROF) have petitioned President Bola Tinubu to approve the Police Pension Exit Bill, which seeks to withdraw the police from the Contributory Pension Scheme and establish a dedicated Nigeria Police Pension Board.

The retirees lamented that despite the passage of the Police Pension Exit Bill by the National Assembly, the bill is yet to be assented to, claiming that the delay has caused many retired officers to continue to live in pain, uncertainty, abject poverty and total neglect.

In the letter dated on May 18, 2026, titled: “A Passionate Appeal For Assent To The Police Pension Exit Bill” and signed by the National Coordinator of PROF, CSP. Raphael Irowainu Rtd and the National Secretary, Dr. Nnaemezie Ignatius Enyi, MBA, SP (Rtd), JP, MNIM, the retirees appealed to the president to immediately assent the bill to cushion the effect of economic hardship on members.

They expressed regret over the deteriorating health conditions of some of the retired officers who sustained gun shots and severe injuries during their service to the nation, stressing that the only solution out of the painful realities was for Tinubu to exit The Nigeria Police Force out of the Contributory Pension Scheme.

The letter reads ” His Excellency,
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR ,
President and Commander-in-Chief Federal Republic of Nigeria,
Aso Rock Villa,
Abuja, Nigeria.

Dear Mr. President,

A PASSIONATE APPEAL FOR ASSENT TO THE POLICE PENSION EXIT BILL

“Your Excellency,
These photographs/videos represent the painful realities faced by many retired police officers in Nigeria who sacrificed their strength, health, and lives in service to our dear nation.

“Today, many of our retired officers are suffering from severe injuries, permanent disabilities, trauma, and other serious medical complications, yet they cannot receive appropriate medical attention because their retirement savings remain trapped under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) administered through PENCOM.”

Mr President, may it please you to know that these gallant officers sustained gunshot wounds while defending the unity of our Nigeria State and or protecting lives and property, suffered permanent facial and bodily disfigurements during active duty, live daily with untreated injuries because of financial hardship, and Depend on family members and public sympathy for survival after decades of patriotic service.”

“Sadly, despite the passage of the Police Pension Exit Bill by the National Assembly, many retired officers continue to live in pain, uncertainty, abject poverty and total neglect. Most recently, seventeen Police officers paid the supreme sacrifice while in a military school !”

“We therefore passionately appeal to Your Excellency to graciously assent to the bill for the TOTAL EXIT OF THE NIGERIA POLICE FORCE FROM PENCOM’S CONTRIBUTORY PENSION SCHEME.

This appeal is founded on the following considerations: The unique and hazardous nature of police duties, the increasing suffering and deaths among retired police officers, the urgent need for accessible healthcare and financial dignity in retirement; and the principle of fairness, considering that other security agencies operate outside the CPS structure.

“A nation that honours its heroes strengthens the morale of those still serving.Conversely, an injured officer abandoned in retirement sends a dangerous message to serving personnel who continue to risk their lives daily in defence of national security.”

“We humbly plead: let compassion, justice, and national gratitude prevail.”

Mr. President, kindly assent to the Police Pension Exit Bill and restore hope, dignity, and medical survival to retired police officers across Nigeria.

Thank you,
Your Excellency, for your anticipated compassion and fatherly intervention” the letter added.
