As the world celebrates this year’s Communications Day, the Association of Communication Scholars and Professionals of Nigeria, Ondo State chapter, has demanded better working conditions for journalists and other professionals in the services of both public and private media organisations.
ACSPN also commended communication professionals across the world, especially in Ondo State, acknowledging their tireless efforts to “change the narrative for positive growth.”
The Association, in a statement jointly signed by its State Coordinator, Sunday Kolawole; Secretary, Richard Ilesanmi and Publicity Secretary, Tosin Ajuwon, also enjoined journalists in Ondo State to uphold their integrity and credibility by guarding against fake news, and rather disseminate information that could bring about development and growth as well as promote peace.
ACSPN further stated that journalists and other media professionals must strive at all times to live up to expectations, as society looks up to them as their mouthpiece and champions of their cause.
The full text of the Association’s statement, titled, “Ondo ACSPN Commemorates World Communications Day,” reads as follows:
Ondo ACSPN Commemorates World Communications Day
The Association of Communication Scholars and Professionals of Nigeria (ACSPN), Ondo State chapter, commemorates 59th World Communications Day by recognising the importance of communication in a community, turning a global village.
It is important that we celebrate the essence of today by appreciating the crucial roles of effective communication in bridging the gap between society and government towards fostering progress, peace, stability, and development in our dear state.
As we highlight the global topic for this year’s World Communications Day with the theme “Share, with gentleness, the hope that is in your heart,” we acknowledge the tireless efforts of our communicators all around the world, particularly in Ondo State for impacting knowledge to change the narrative for positive growth.
This impact has assisted our media professionals and Journalists in the state to harness the zeal of working both day and night to inform, educate, and inspire society, who form a large audience with stories that connect them to the world, see to their needs, address their challenges and drive development.
At ACSPN, we salute the courage of these media workers, as we all celebrate the World Communications Day, for their hard work, passion, resilience, steadfastness, and courage to tell the truth in the face of adversity. We also demand better work conditions for those in the services of either privately owned or public media organisations.
It is also important that Journalists in the state disseminate stories that bring about development and growth and promote peace as well as love as society looks up to us to propagate their needs.
We, therefore, appeal that journalists must guard against fake news, eschew all forms of misinformation, and deliberate spread of falsehood that will make us lose our integrity. We must avoid compromise in the midst of temptations but rather hold on tenaciously to the virtue of standing by the truth. We must continually preach selflessness and peace among ourselves while considering that communication is the backbone of our interconnected society.
With this year’s celebration, it is also important to remind the government of its responsibility by communicating effectively its programmes and activities to the people of the state, especially focusing on how to solve people’s problems in the face of security challenges. We encourage leaders in power who will harness the potentials of communication to promote peace, understanding, and development.
We pray that God strengthens us and imbues within us the vigour to always be willing vessels of his Spirit.
Happy World Communications Day
